Community Foundation Awards Scholarships to Students at Local High Schools

The Community Foundation of Boone County awarded 50 different students with scholarships or gift certificates. Of these scholarships, three Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships were given.

The Community Foundation of Boone County awarded an estimated total of $198,540 to students who attend Western Boone on awards night May 14. That evening 13 scholarships and two gift certificates were given away.

Mallory Michalke and Cameron Husk were two of the three recipients of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Deb Smith of Thorntown presented them with their awards. This scholarship which provides full-tuition for four years of undergraduate study to any Indiana college and an annual $800 book stipend to each student. Mallory will be attending Purdue University to major in science toward a career in pediatric dentistry. Rose-Hulman is the college of choice for Cameron where he plans to pursue engineering. In addition, both of their names were added to the perpetual plaque at the school, which displays all of the names of the recipients from Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School who have won this prestigious award.

In addition, Kyle Mohler and Kimberly Barker were two of the finalists for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Each received a gift certificate in the amount of $350 for college supplies.

Three students were awarded the Pliny and Mildred Randall Scholarship. Josh Schrier received $1,000 a year for four years. Amanda Worrell and Drew Galvin received $1,000 a year for two years. Recipients were selected from a strong field of applicants in recognition of academic and civic achievements. The Randall scholarship was established by a bequest of Mildred Randall in 1984. Josh will attend George Washington University and study international affairs. IUPUI is the college of choice for Amanda in which she will major in radiography. Drew is pursuing a career in automotive management and will attend Lincoln Technical Institute.

Tyler Lee was the recipient of the Ralph F. & Katherine L. Beam Family Scholarship with an award of $2,000 renewable for four years. Mr. & Mrs. Beam established this renewable scholarship to provide financial assistance toward college expenses of a Western Boone graduate.

Robbie Farrow received $500 from the Ron Bush Family Scholarship. The Bushes established this scholarship in memory of their son, James Ronald Bush, a local area farmer and a 1970 graduate of Granville Wells. Both the Ralph F. & Katherine L. Beam Scholarship and the Ron Bush Family Scholarship are through the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Boone County.

One recipient of the State Bank of Lizton Community Bankers Scholarship was John Saxton. He will receive $2,000 per year renewable for four years. He plans on studying English literature at either the University of Chicago or DePauw University. The State Bank of Lizton’s Board of Directors and officers established this scholarship in November 2000.

Eric Ragsdale, board member of the Community Foundation of Boone County presented the Boone County Agriculture Scholarship. It was awarded to Daniel Haberlin. The citizens of Boone County established this award for students who are interested in pursuing careers in agriculture or a related field. Daniel received $2,000 towards his continuing education.

In addition to the Boone County Agriculture Scholarship, Daniel Haberlin was a Buren Fund Scholarship recipient. This scholarship was started with a bequest in 1914 by William Higgins to provide support “in aiding worthy young men in procuring such college education either technical or literacy.” This scholarship is for $1,000 a year renewable for four years. He plans on attending Purdue University towards a degree in pre-veterinary medicine.

Ashley Overfield is this year’s recipient of the Florence Gruver Memorial Scholarship for Boone County. Robert V. Copeland established this scholarship in memory of his friend, Florence Gruver, who died in 1994, and who had been a teacher and a fine and true lady. Ashley will receive $2,000 a year for four years.

The Edward K. Castetter Memorial Award was awarded to Drew Galvin. This $340 award was established in memory of Castetter who, after retiring from Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati, returned home to play an active leadership role in Boone County.

The Carl Witt Trust Scholarship recipient was Kyle Mohler. Carl Witt who was an life long resident of the county, a school board member and a self-made man who’s business savvy led to his generous scholarship donation established this scholarship. Mohler received $2,000 a years for four years. He plans to pursue a career in biochemistry at Purdue University.

Lebanon High School held their awards night also on May 14. This years The Foundation gave six scholarships and four gift certificates to students. The awards totaled $129,750.

Adam McClean was the third Boone County recipient of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Adam will attend DePauw University and plans on majoring in journalism and advertising. His name will be added to the perpetual plaque at Lebanon High School, which displays all past Lebanon recipients names of this prestigious award.

In addition to the Lilly scholar presentation, Mike Caldwell, board member of the Community Foundation of Boone County also presented a $350 gift certificate to the other Lebanon finalists of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. These funds are for purchasing of college supplies. Ryan Harrison, Cory Heck, Matthew Greene, and Rachel Cumberbatch were the recipients.

Ryan Harrison received the State Bank of Lizton Community Bankers Scholarship established by its Board of Directors and officers. This award is for $2,000 per year for four years. He plans on attending either Indiana University or DePauw to pursue a degree in pre-med and music.

Jenna Wright was the recipient of Psi Iota Xi-Omega Chapter Malpas Scholarship. She will receive $500 a year renewable for four years. This scholarship is awarded to a girl who ranks in the top _ of her class. Preference is given to a Lebanon High School student who plans to major in art, literature, music, or speech & hearing.

Jeffrey Smock will receive $350 towards his college education. He received the David Spear Memorial Scholarship: Courage to Change. Jeffrey will attend Indiana University to study business administration or sports management. The friends and family of David Spear, who lost his life in a tragic accident in 2000, established this scholarship. The recipient has made a lifestyle change, which helped him or others reach their full potential on the football field, in the classroom, and in the community.

George Morton, board member of the Community Foundation of Boone County presented a Boone County Agriculture Scholarship. It was awarded to Rachel Cumberbatch. The citizens of Boone County established this award for students who are interested in pursuing a career in agriculture or a related field. Rachel received $2,000, which she will use to study pre-veterinary medicine at Purdue University.

Dustin Lukes was one of the two recipients of the Buren Fund Scholarship. He will receive $1,000 each for four years. This scholarship was stated with a bequest in 1914 of William Higgins. Dustin will be attending Indiana University to study business.

Zionsville Community High School held their awards night on May 15. Twenty seven scholarships and three gift certificates were given to students. $35,445 was the total amount awarded by the Community Foundation of Boone County at Zionsville High School.

Stephanie Kessel, Elizabeth Burgard, and Haley Hypes were chosen as three finalists out of 13 Boone County residents who were interviewed for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. A $350 gift certificate was awarded each of them to purchase college supplies.

In its third year, the Eugene Wagner Wrestling Scholarship was awarded. Brandon Lapehn received $775 towards his education. This scholarship was given to a student who was a four year participant in a wrestling program with a minimum of three years in the ZCHS program. In addition, the recipient earned a letter in wrestling 2 or his 4 years in high school. Brandon plans to study at Indiana University and major in business or education.

The Thomas E. Gruhl Scholarship is awarded to Seven Brooksby and she will receive $1,000. Her plans are to study consumer and family science and attend Purdue University. The Board of Directors of Mid State Bank in honor of the retirement of bank president, Tom Gruhl established this scholarship.

Lauren Ostendorf was the recipient of a few scholarships. Lauren received the Todd Getty Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,795. This fund was established by donations from the family and friends of Todd W. Getty who was killed in a car accident August 30, 1992. The scholarship is given to a student who most exemplifies some of the finer characteristics of Getty: sportsmanship, strong work ethic, and positive attitude.

In addition to the Todd Getty Scholarship, Lauren Ostendorf received the Pratt Family Fund Scholarship. Bing and Suzi Pratt established this fund in honor of their daughters. It is to be awarded to a female graduating senior of Zionsville Community High School who has leadership and initiative in scholastics and athletics. Ostendorf plans to attend Indiana University and will receive $1,000 towards her education.

The Thomas G. Slama Scholarship was awarded to Karen McLaughlin. Dr. Thomas G. Slama, a resident of Zionsville, established this fund. He wanted to do something in acknowledgement of what he and his children had received from the community, and to encourage medical studies. This $500 scholarship renewable for four years was given to Karen who plans to pursue a degree in biology/pre-med at Hanover College.

Elizabeth Burgard was the recipient of the Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees Scholarship for $1,000 which is awarded yearly by the school board to the student who shows appreciation of educational excellence; continuous improvement in academic standing; involvement in the political process; and an impact by the teaching community.

Zionsville Optimist Club awarded two scholarships for the first time this year. One scholarship was given to a student who will be pursuing a four year degree. Hillary Gangstad is the recipient of this $2,000 scholarship. Jacob Howerton will be pursuing a two years degree or vocational certificate and will receive $1,000 towards his education.

Lauren Ostendorf was one of two recipients in Boone County who won the Carl Witt Trust Scholarship. Jim Eggers presented this award for $2,000 renewable for four years.

Katherine McWhorter received the Entrepreneur Scholarship Fund in Honor of Lloyd & Jane Taylor. Jeff Thomasson who credits Lloyd Taylor with encouraging him to pursue his education and business goals established the Entrepreneur Scholarship. Katherine received a one time award of $4,275. She has already exhibited entrepreneurship skills with her business “Kookies” by Katie when she was seven years old. Purdue University is her college of choice to pursue a degree in hospitality and tourism management.

There were three students who received the Homer & Gwendolen Fix Memorial Scholarships this year. To receive this scholarship, a student must have participated in the athletic programs of Zionsville Community Middle School and continued such participation through graduation from ZCHS. Sam Fix established this fund in memory of his parents. Evan Hardin, Davis Rabb, and Haley Hypes were the award winners, each receiving $1,000.

Arthur & Nancy Hansen Scholarship Award for Science and Mathematics was awarded to Ryan Nasserizafar, Molly Schaus, Ryan McCarthy, and Joel Love. Ryan, Senior student, received $400; Molly, junior $300; Ryan, sophomore $200; and Joel, freshman $100. Students are nominated for this award from both the math and science departments. Ryan Nasserizafar was a recipient all four years in high school. They have all excelled or shown a strong interest in science and mathematics.

Daniel Houchens was the recipient of two scholarships. He received the Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,040. This award was presented to him in memory of Bauman, 1981 graduate of Zionsville Community High School, who excelled in all aspects of his life prior to his untimely death on September 29, 1986. This scholarship is given to a student who makes a significant contribution to the athletic program.

In addition to the Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship, Daniel Houchens won the Superintendent Stay-in-School Scholarship. The $1,000 award is given to a high school senior, but is not received by the student until he/she is enrolled in his/her second year of college. Daniel plans on attending Indiana University to major in business finance.

Lindsay Van Dyke is the first recipient of the Aaron & Cathy Coates Vocal Music Scholarship. This $1,000 award was established to honor Aaron & Cathy Coates and was given to a ZCHS senior who had been a member of the ZCHS vocal music program for at least 3 years. In addition, the recipient exhibited scholarship, leadership, strong work ethic, and responsibility in pursuing/developing musicianship. Ball State University is Lindsay’s college of choice to pursue a degree in theatre design and technology.

The Richard H. Crosser Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Abigail Clark. She will receive $1,100 towards her tuition at Indiana University to study interior design. These funds were received from Trinity Homes, a part of Crossmann Communities for students graduating from Zionsville schools. This scholarship is in memory of past president, Richard H. Crosser who passed away in 2002.

Megan Williams is the recipient of the Most Outstanding Photography Student Scholarship offered by Village Photo. She received a photography bag full of items and $250 cash award which she plans on applying towards her college education.

Noah Lucas and Laura Ostendorf are this years recipients of the Zionsville Booster Club Scholarship. They will each receive funds toward their college careers. The Zionsville Booster Club annually gives this award to a high school boy and girl student involved in athletics.

The American Legion Post 79-Jack Clark Scholarship is in the amount of $425 was awarded to Ryan Stephens and Brandon Lapehn who will graduate from Zionsville Community High School. This scholarship was established with proceeds from the sale of property bequeathed by Jack Clark to Post 79 of the American Legion in Zionsville.

$310 was given to Craig Walker as the recipient of the Darrell A. Portell 4-H Memorial Scholarship. To be chosen as the recipient of this scholarship you must have been actively involved in 4-H for the last three years of eligibility. Barbara Portell established this scholarship in memory of her husband. Craig’s plans are to attend Indiana University to study biology.

Sheridan High School’s awards night was May 28. One scholarship and one gift certificate were given to the students. $1,100 was the total amount awarded by the Community Foundation of Boone County at Sheridan High School.

Katie Carr was one of the 13 finalists for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. A $350 gift certificate was awarded to her to buy supplies for college.

The Marjorie Stonehill English, Journalism and Creative Arts Scholarship recipient was Ross Waitt. This $750 scholarship was established by Marjorie Stonehill for students who want to pursue careers in the fields of English, Journalism or the Creative Arts. Ross plans to study creative/professional writing at Purdue University this fall.

Five awards were given to students who did not graduate this year from a Boone County school totaling $2,150.

A student from Brownwood High School in Brownwood, Texas will receive $500 for the Jim & Frances Capps Scholarship. Boone County residents John and Charlene Roth in memory of Charlene’s parents established this. Although it is administered by the Community Foundation of Boone County, it is given to qualified students of Brownwood High School, Texas.

Jerry Smith will be the recipient of the Honorable Allen F. Wharry Memorial Scholarship. He is currently enrolled at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. This scholarship was established by friends and family of the late Judge Wharry. He will receive $300 towards his education in law.

The American Legion Post 79-Jack Clark Scholarship also awarded Amanda Higgins and Steven Webb a $425 scholarship each towards furthering their educations. They are both currently attending college.

Chad Cravens was also the recipient of the Thomas E. Gruhl Scholarship. He is presently attending Purdue University studying electrical engineering. He will receive $500 towards continuing his studies.

The Foundation’s scholarship selections are determined by a variety of methods, depending upon the donor’s charitable goals. Some funds have their own selection committees; committees appointed by the Foundation select others.
