26 January 2007
The Community Foundation of Boone County renews its commitment to Boone County to improve the well being of the children with the announcement of the 2006 fatherhood grant initiative programs. The initiative's purpose is to increase the proportion of children growing up with involved, responsible and committed fathers. A total of $69,773 has been awarded to three not for profit organizations in Boone County. The programming started this month.
Youth Action Community Council in partnership with Healthy Families and the Meridian Health Group will be implementing the InsideOut Dad's program to fathers in the Boone County jail system. $23,500 has been awarded for this program. This twelve topic curriculum is being offered nationally to incarcerated dads to help bridge the gap between the inmate father and his children. This program provides practical and innovative ways to help overcome the physical and psychological challenges that incarcerated fathers face while in jail and after release.
The Boone County Community Health Clinic received $21,273 to implement the "Childhood Health Needs" program. It is an excellent way for dads to have a better understanding of the needs of their children through education. This once a month three hour class will be available for fathers who are part of the InsideOut Dad's program and will be held with other dads involved in the fatherhood initiative programs in our county. In addition, fathers will become familiar with the Boone County Community Health Clinic and can receive a medical assessment if they are uninsured or under insured.
Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding Center has been granted $25,000 to provide a six week riding program where both father and child can develop a positive relationship while working with horses. It is based on the "Survivor" television series and consists of six challenges designed to promote communication. This program is available from referrals from Boone County Mental Health Association and other fathers and their children who need assistance in the Boone County community.
The Community Foundation of Boone County's mission is to provide pathways for connecting people who care with causes that matter for now and in the future.
