The Community Foundation of Boone County is proud to announce the 2007 Fatherhood Initiative grant recipients. The initiative, in its third and final year, has awarded three non-profit organizations a total of $47,568 to increase the proportion of children growing up with involved, responsible and committed fathers.
Youth Action Community Council in partnership with Healthy Families and the Meridian Health Group were awarded funds to continue the InsideOut dad's program to fathers in the Boone County jail system. Boone County leads the way in offering this nationally recognized twelve-topic curriculum at our county jail. Incarcerated dads are offered these classes to help bridge the gap between them and their children by providing practical and innovative ways to help overcome the physical and psychological challenges that they face while in jail and after release.
The Boone County Community Health Clinic received a grant for the continuance of the "childhood health needs" program. This course provides an excellent way for dads to have a better understanding of the needs of their children through education. This class currently is available for fathers who are part of the InsideOut Dad's program offered at the Boone County Jail and is held with other dads involved in the fatherhood initiative programs in our county. In addition to providing classes to fathers, the course will be expanded to mothers in 2008. The grant will also be used to include health assessments on all inmates and to build teaching relationships.
Crossroads of America, the Boy Scouts of America has been awarded a grant to help increase the awareness and membership of boys and fathers participating in Boy Scouts in Boone County by hiring a part-time marketing assistant. With the initiative's mission being to increase the proportion of children growing up with involved, responsible and committed fathers, scouting can be a way to connect fathers with their sons and to provide more mentors and dads trained to volunteer.
The Community Foundation appreciates all the time, energy and effort of the organizations that submitted grant proposals of the Fatherhood Initiative. There were great ideas and we wish those organizations the best in securing funding for their programs.
The mission of the Community Foundation of Boone County is to provide pathways for connecting people who care with causes that matter for now and in the future.
