Staff and volunteers of nonprofit family, youth, educational, and faith-based organizations and churches in Boone County are invited to register for the Fatherhood Summit, a free session to be presented in Lebanon on Thursday, April 28, 2005. The Community Foundation of Boone County, in cooperation with a Task Force of Boone County leaders, is presenting this Summit. Board members, staff, volunteers, and others who work with Boone County youth and families are invited to attend.

The Community Foundation has recently completed an informal but extensive assessment of community needs affecting all of Boone County. As a result, we have identified improving the well being of Boone County's children as the most pressing countywide issue. To address this issue, the Foundation hopes to increase the proportion of children growing up with involved, responsible and committed fathers. The Foundation Board is now committed to focusing its resources on developing new community partnerships or to identify, assist or expand existing programs that will effectively address the fatherhood issue.

The goal of the Fatherhood Summit is to raise awareness among a cross-section of community leaders about the positive effects of responsible fatherhood, and to encourage community leaders to join with each other, and with the Community Foundation, as we address this important topic. At the Summit, the Community Foundation will formally announce a major three-year grant initiative to address fatherhood issues in Boone County.

"Strong families are one of Boone County's greatest assets, yet too many children are growing up with fathers who are disconnected, disinterested, or absent from their children's lives," says Lisa Latz John, executive director of the Community Foundation of Boone County. "An involved father directly contributes to better school performance, reduced substance abuse, less crime and delinquency, fewer emotional and other behavioral problems, fewer teen pregnancies, less risk of abuse or neglect and lower teen suicide. The research is clear, fathers matter significantly in the lives of their children."

The Summit will take place at the Ulen Country Club, 100 Country Club Drive, Lebanon from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM. To register, call the Community Foundation at (317) 873-0210 or (765) 482-0024 or download a registration form (PDF 88K).

The Community Foundation of Boone County provides pathways for connecting people who care with causes that matter for now and in the future.
