Three Boone County students will receive full, four-year scholarships as the Community Foundation of Boone County 2003 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars.
Mallory Michalke, Adam McClean and Cameron Husk will receive not only full tuition to the Indiana college of their choice, but, also an $800 stipend for required books and equipment.
Mallory, daughter of Jim and Heather Michalke of Lebanon, is graduating from Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School. She is a very poised, motivated hard working individual who accelerated over her high school career to become the salutatorian of her senior class. Mallory has been an active participant of the swimming and track and field teams receiving the best mental attitude award and recognized as a 2nd all conference team member. In addition, she has been a leader in Key Club, active member of 4-H, student council and the foreign interest club. Her dream is to become a pediatric dentist and begin her studies at Purdue University this fall. Mallory chose pediatric dentistry because she wants to continue to help children build up their self confidence by improving their dental appearance as she has helped build them up teaching them how to swim.
Adam, son of Eric and Anna McClean of Lebanon, is graduating from Lebanon High School. He is an outstanding student ranked 2nd in his class of 188 students, and is pursuing an academic honors diploma with a challenging curriculum. Currently, Adam works part time in technical support/website maintenance, and provides videographer service both in the community and in school earning him experience toward his career as a desk top publisher. Leadership positions include editor in chief of the yearbook, president of band council and national honor society. Adam plans are to attend DePauw University in the fall and major in advertising/journalism.
Cameron, son of Gordon and Yvonda Husk of Jamestown, will be graduating from Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School. He is a very intellectual, self motivated, philosophical student of life who enjoys studying scientific and world events. Not only is he ranked 4th in his class of 128, he achieved nearly a perfect SAT score. Cameron is involved in a number of academic activities with outstanding technology awards which go hand in hand towards pursing a career in engineering. He works part time and enjoys tutoring physics in his free time where he uses his expertise and knowledge to help others. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is his school of choice where he will pursue a mechanical engineering degree.
Thirteen students from Boone County out of 44 applicants were interviewed for these three scholarships. Those interviewed from Western Boone were Cameron Husk, Mallory Michalke, Kimberly Barker, and Kyle Mohler. Lebanon High School's students chosen were Adam McClean, Ryan Harrison, Cory Heck, Matthew Greene, and Rachel Cumberbatch. Stephanie Kessel, Elizabeth Burgard, and Haley Hypes were interviewed from Zionsville. Katherine Carr was a student who was interviewed from Sheridan High School. To be able to apply for this scholarship, the students had to be in the upper 20% of their senior class after seven semesters. A number of other factors were considered such as GPA, curriculum taken, honors received, test scores, extracurricular activities and community involvement, need, work experience, reference and an essay. After the interviews the Community Foundation of Boone County scholarship committee narrowed the field to 3 nominees. The finalists' names were submitted to the Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for the selection of the recipients. ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.
The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. There were 363 scholarships awarded statewide.
