Emily Faggetti
Joe Heneghan

Two Boone County students have been named recipients of four-year, full-tuition scholarships as the Community Foundation of Boone County's 2009 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars.

Emily Faggetti and Joe Heneghan will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of their choice and an $800 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.

Emily, daughter of Sam and Jane Faggetti, is graduating from Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School. She is an outstanding student and valedictorian of her graduating class of 149. Emily has taken on leadership roles as a class officer for three years, member of the student advisory board four years and is a two year member of National Honor Society. In addition, she has participated in both soccer and track and field during high school. Community and volunteerism have been important to Emily, also as she has been actively involved in her Boone County 4-H club, the Youth as Resources organization and in both Mechanicsburg Christian and Dover Christian Church. She is employed as a childcare provider at Dover Angels Daycare. This fall Emily plans to attend Purdue University to major in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish.

Joe, son of Mike and Lorie Heneghan, is graduating from Zionsville Community High School. He also has excelled academically in his class of 375, earning an academic honors diploma and participating in National Honor Society for two years. Joe has been a leader in the marching and jazz bands and excels in playing the trumpet. During his junior year, he became a founding member and teacher of the ZHCS scrabble club, is currently a member of the robotics club and has participated in both basketball and track and field in high school. In addition, he has volunteered at a number of places as a Boone County 4-H member, team leader at the Boys and Girls Club, and participated on church mission trips. He currently is the youngest member of the Boone County Antique Tractor and Machinery Association. Besides his many activities, Joe is self employed in the mowing and landscaping business and works with Kouns Agriculture. Joe's college of choice is Purdue University, where he will study agricultural engineering.

Eleven students from Boone County out of fifty applicants were interviewed for these two scholarships. Claire Milam and Emily Northcutt were interviewed from Lebanon High School. Kendra Hedge was interviewed from Sheridan High School. From Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School, Mackenzie Benson, Emily Faggetti, Blake Mohler, and John Scott were interviewed. Sukriti Bansal, Joe Heneghan, Chris Mattson, and Elizabeth Neel were interviewed from Zionsville Community High School. After the Community Foundation of Boone County's scholarship committee narrowed the field to the two nominees and alternates, the finalists' names were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for the selection of the recipients.

ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.

The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bachelor's degree. There were 216 scholarships awarded statewide.
