Valerie SharpValerie Sharp, daughter of Debra Sharp of Jamestown received the only Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship made possible through the Community Foundation of Boone County in the spring of 1998. She will be graduating from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday, May 25th with a major in electrical engineering and a minor in Latin American Studies. Val has already accepted a job with Power Tech Engineering in Avon, Indiana as a project engineer.

She graduated from Western Boone High School. In 1998, 45 students applied for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. With this scholarship, she received full-tuition and required fees for four years and $700 annually for a book stipend. She was chosen based on a number of factors. The criteria included: grade point average especially improvement or maintenance; test scores on SAT/ACT; involvement in the school and community; financial need, work or summer experience; two references; a one page essay and an interview.

Val stated, "This scholarship has meant everything to my education here at Rose. I would have never been able to afford a private school if it weren't for the Lilly Scholarship, and Rose was my first choice."

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship program was established to raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana and to increase awareness of the Foundation to improve the quality of life of the county's residents.
