Through the College Costs Estimator service, the National Center for College Costs works with families regardless of where they fall along the socioeconomic spectrum to help them navigate their way through the financial aid system and to understand college funding issues. This is done through individual household analyses and group workshops. Additionally, through a toll free hotline, the Center provides families with ongoing support and advice in the months and years ahead when it comes to college costs issues.

Last year the Community Foundation funded this program so the service was free to all families. The Foundation is pleased to be able to expand the service to families with students entering their sophomore or junior year. Again this year, the service will be free to all families. How to Start a Scholarship

Many donors create endowed Scholarship Funds to honor or memorialize an individual, or to serve a specific purpose that is important to the donor. Scholarship can enable students to pursue traditional higher education or vocational training. Income from the endowment provides scholarships each year.

Ways to give to start a scholarship:

  1. Give Cash or Securities
All donation are tax deductible. The gift of highly appreciated stocks are deductible in the full amount of the stock on the day it was given without the donor paying capital gain taxes.
  2. Include the Community Foundation in your will or estate plan
A bequest may be for a specific amount or for the residue or any portion of the estate.
  3. Give a gift of life insurance
Creating a major gift at a relatively low cost to the donor. A tax receipt is issued for the premiums paid by the donor when the Community Foundation is named the owner of a new or existing policy.
  4. Transfer existing private foundation or charitable trust
Administrators may find it practical and economical to transfer assets to a named fund within the Community Foundation, assuring the intent of the fund in perpetuity.
  5. Set up an annuity, charitable remainder trust or other planned giving instrument
To suit your financial needs and benefit your favorite charity through The Community Foundation.

The Community Foundation's staff or directors can discuss with you the most appropriate vehicle for your situation and interests. We welcome the opportunity to answer your specific questions at any time.
