The Community Foundation of Boone County awarded $382,730 in scholarships to Boone County students this spring.

Among the good works of the Community Foundation of Boone County is the number of scholarships and gift certificates awarded to outstanding residents of Boone County. In this issue, the 2001 scholars and their awards are introduced.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships

The three winners from fifty-eight applicants were Lee Anne McKelvey and Elizabeth Powell of Lebanon High School, and Sirenna Piercy of Sheridan High School. Both Lee Anne and Elizabeth will attend DePauw University. Elizabeth has been accepted into the management honors program. Lee Anne plans to study chemistry or economics. Hanover College is the school of choice for Sirenna where she will pursue a degree in psychology. Elizabeth stated, "The evening I received the phone call that I had been awarded this scholarship was one of the best nights of my life." Each of these students will receive full tuition, required fees and a special allocation for required books and equipment for four years.

Eight additional students from three Boone County schools were finalists. They were: from Lebanon High School, Natalie Hendricks; from Western Boone, Alicia Johnson, Jessica Miller, Justin Mohler and Lindsay Terhune; and from Zionsville, Ashly Cumberworth, Emily Olberding, and Lisa Radivan. To choose the final recipients was a difficult decision for the committee since all of the students interviewed were articulate goal oriented and successful. Gift certificates for college supplies were given to the remaining eight finalists.

American Legion Post 79-Jack Clark Scholarship Fund

Cheryl Russell, Michael Webb, and Steven Webb were this year's recipients. The Legion chose them for their commitment to their communities. This scholarship was established with proceeds from the sale of property that was left by Jack Clark to Post 79 of the American Legion, Zionsville.

Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship

Martha Elmore received the Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship. She made a significant contribution to the Zionsville Community High School's athletic program by being involved in track and soccer. Martha plans on continuing her education at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. This scholarship was established in memory of Tom Bauman who excelled in all aspects of his life prior to his untimely death in 1986. He was a 1981 graduate of Zionsville who made a major contribution to athletics.

Ralph F. & Katherine L. Beam Family Scholarship

Lindsay Terhune was the first recipient of this scholarship. She will be attending Purdue University to study elementary education. Mr. & Mrs. Beam, long time residents of Jamestown established this renewable scholarship with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Boone County to provide financial assistance toward college expenses of a Western Boone graduate.

Ben Brimmer Arts Scholarship

This scholarship will be given to a student from Zionsville Community High School who will be studying art in college or vocational school, and who has been employed in the Zionsville area. Brian Schmutzler, a 2000 Zionsville graduate helped to establish this fund in memory of his friend, Ben Brimmer.

Boone County Agriculture Scholarship

Jessica Miller graduated from Western Boone High School and plans to attend Texas A & M to study agricultural economics. She has been an active member of FFA and Boone County 4-H. George and Nancy Morton established this scholarship for students who are interested in agriculture or related fields.

Boone County Ambasssador's IPALCO Scholarship

Four students received this year's award. They were from Lebanon High School, Andrew Wilhoite and Stacy Esslinger; and from Western Boone Garrett Kelly and Justin Mohler. All four recipients will be attending Purdue University this fall. The Ambassador's Scholarship is awarded annually to Boone County seniors who have been active in the 4-H program for the previous three years, and who have been active in their communities. These students will be majoring in the area of environmental or energy-related issues.

Ron Bush Family Scholarship

Wes Hill was the first recipient of this scholarship available only to Western Boone graduates. Purdue University is his school of choice and he plans to pursue a degree in communications/management. The recipient must have been a 4-H member in Boone County. The Bushes established this scholarship in memory of their son, James Ronald Bush, a local area farmer and a 1970 graduate of Granville Wells. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.

Jim & Frances Capps Scholarship

Susan Sansom was this year's recipient of the Capps scholarship. Susan will attend Angelo State University to study science/general studies. The Capps scholarship is given to a qualified student of Brownwood High School in Brownwood, Texas, who is deserving of financial assistance and who is likely to succeed as a college or university or vocational/technical student. John and Charlene Roth established the scholarship fund in memory of Charlene's parents.

Edward K. Castetter Memorial Award

Martha Elmore, a recent graduate of Zionsville Community High School, won this award. Each principal from the three Boone County high schools nominates one student from his or her school who exhibits a positive attitude, dedication, preserving, pride and leadership. Martha plans to pursue a degree in health and exercise sciences. Martha stated, "What an incredible honor to be chosen for an award dedicated to a man of great character, service and leadership." The award was established in memory and honor of Edward K. Castetter who attended Thorntown High School. He played a very active leadership role in the community, serving as a board member of Witham Hospital Foundation, a member of the Thorntown Lions Club, a member of Boone County Leadership, and a Trustee for Boone County.

Crossmann Communities Scholarship

Natalie Hendricks, Abby Brockman, and Christopher McAttee were the three recipients of this scholarship available only to graduating seniors of Lebanon High School. Natalie will be attending Ball State University; Abby plans to go to Indiana University and Christopher will go to Purdue University. This scholarship was established with funds from the home building business of Crossmann Communities for students who will be studying structural engineering, architecture, building trades, drafting, business, finance, accounting, real estate, or other field related to building trades.

The Entrepreneur Scholarship Fund - in Honor of Lloyd & Jane Taylor

Mark Shortz, a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, plans to study civil engineering. He has already been an entrepreneur by establishing his own business entitled Mark Shortz, Inc in which he provides a lawn care and snow removal service. Jeff and Benita Thomasson established this scholarship. Jeff was a former Zionsville resident and graduate of Zionsville Community High School. As a high school student, Jeff worked for Mr. Taylor at Taylor Oil in Zionsville and credits Lloyd Taylor with encouraging him to pursue his education and business goals. He wanted to honor this couple who had positively influenced his young life, and he started this scholarship fund in their honor.

Homer and Gwendolen Fix Memorial Scholarship

Aaron Davis and Rachel Carter were the recipients of this award. Rachel plans to attend the University of Southern Indiana to study elementary education. Aaron will major in accounting at the University of Indianapolis. They both participated in the athletic programs of Zionsville Community Middle School, and continued such participation through graduation from Zionsville Community High School. Each spring a euchre tournament is held to raise funds for the scholarship, which was established by Sam Fix in memory of his parents Homer and Gwendolen. Sam retired in 1994 from Zionsville Community High School where he served as a teacher, coach and athletic director.

Sam Fix Scholarship

Three students were chosen as the first recipients of this scholarship. Katie Janssen will be pursuing a career in animal and food science when she attends Kansas State University. St. Louis University is the school of choice for Dana Brinkman where she plans to receive a master's degree in physical therapy. Shannon Yde will attend Purdue University. Sam established this scholarship to award deserving students scholarships for continuing their education past high school.

Todd Getty Mental Attitude Memorial Scholarship

Mark Shortz, a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, was chosen to receive this award by the varsity head coaches, principal and athletic director. He will attend Purdue University. He is an athlete who possesses a cheerful, positive attitude, strong work ethic, and good sportsmanship and is a friend to all, which were characteristics of Todd. Todd W. Getty was a junior at Zionsville High School when his friends and family established this fund in his memory.

Thomas E. Gruhl Scholarship Fund

Amanda Read and Chad Cravens were the recipients of this scholarship. Amanda plans to attend Milligan College to pursue a degree in math education. Chad will be pursuing a career in electrical engineering at Purdue University. The Board of Directors of Mid State Bank established this educational scholarship fund in honor of the retirement of Tom Gruhl as bank president in March 1993. This award is made annually to a Boone County resident, enrolled or graduated from Zionsville Community High School or a contract teacher or administrator employed by Eagle-Union School Corporation. A student recipient must be enrolled and accepted for post high school education or training at an accredited institution with preference given to students attending Franklin College. For a school staff recipient, awards includes seminar/workshop/conference enrollment and attendance.

Florence Gruver Memorial Scholarship

Erin McGlocklin of Zionsville Community High School was awarded this scholarship designed for students who are pursuing careers in teaching. In high school she did her cadet teaching with first grade students at Pleasant View Elementary School. Erin plans to study at Indiana University and major in elementary education. Robert V. Copeland established this annual, renewable scholarship in memory of his friend, Florence Gruver, who died in 1994, and who had been a teacher and a fine and true lady.

Arthur & Nancy Hansen Scholarship Award for Science & Mathematics

Dan Schultz, senior Aaron Lewis, junior Ryan Nasserizafar, sophomore and Rachel Heneghan, freshman were the students chosen to receive this scholarship. Schultz will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology to pursue a degree in electrical engineering/computer science. Rachel said "It's important for girls to stay focused on math and science because we can do anything if we try." Dr. Arthur Hansen established this award, which is given is given yearly to one student in each grade attending Zionsville Community High School for their excellence in science and mathematics.

Buren Fund Scholarship of the William Higgins Trust

Ethan Corser of Lebanon High School, Justin Mohler of Western Boone Junior Senior High School, and Matt Mullis of Zionsville Community High School were recipients of this award. Justin will be attending Purdue University to study agricultural economics. Ivy Tech State College is the school of choice for Ethan to pursue a degree in welding. Matt plans to obtain an engineering degree from Georgia Institute of Technology. William Higgins established this scholarship through a trust. It is named in memory of his son, Buren, to aid worthy young men in pursuing a college education.

Higgins Scholarship

This is one of two scholarships established by the late Mabel and Eugene Higgins. The Higgins Scholarship is for a Boone County resident. To be eligible for the scholarship a student must be attending an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. Awards are given every other year. This year Mabel passed away. She had a love of education and had been a math teacher in Knightstown and Greenfield. She and her husband farmed in the Lebanon community for forty years. Mabel served her community as a member of the Board of Directors for the Citizens Bank & Trust Company. Memberships included the United Methodist Church in Franklin; and in Lebanon the Cooking Club, Psi Iota Xi Auxiliary, and Ulen Country Club. She will be greatly missed.

Darrell A. Portell 4-H Memorial Scholarship

Casey Neese, graduate of Western Boone High School, is the winner of this award. Black Hawk East is the college of Casey's choice. She will study equestrian science. Recipients of this award have been active in 4-H for the last three years of eligibility and possess good leadership skills. Barbara Portell established this scholarship in memory of her late husband Darrell A. Portell.

Pratt Family Fund Scholarship

Ashly Cumberworth is this years scholarship recipient. She will be attending the University of Notre Dame to study pre-medicine. She was an active participant in diving and track. The scholarship is awarded to a senior girl at Zionsville Community High School who has shown the highest degree of leadership and initiative in scholarship and athletics. Bing and Suzi Pratt to honor their daughters, Kara and Lisa established this scholarship.

Psi Iota Xi-Omega Chapter Malpas Scholarship

Holly McCormack received this award. She plans to pursue a psychology degree at Ball State University. This scholarship was established by Mr. Malpas to be awarded by Psi Iota Xi, Omega Chapter to a graduating female from Lebanon High School. It is preferred, but not mandatory, that applicants major in art, literature, music, or speech and hearing.

Western Boone-Pliny & Mildred Randall Scholarship

Marissa Johnson, Jessica Miller and Robbi Harless are this years recipients. Marissa will be attending Indiana University to study business management. Robbi is pursuing a telecommunication arts degree at Butler University. Jessica will be studying at Texas A&M. Students must be attending Western Boone High School and be in good standing with documented academic successes. Mildred and Pliny Randall, who farmed in northern Boone County and lived near Thorntown established this scholarship. Upon their death, they directed that a general scholarship fund be established for students at four area high schools. The Community Foundation of Boone County administers the scholarship for students attending Western Boone High School.

Harold and Evelyn Rice Scholarship

This scholarship is for a young man who is an active member of the Dover Christian Church and is enrolled in a Christian Bible College for the purpose of preparing for ministry. Morris D. and Patricia Ramsey established this fund in honor of her parents Harold and Evelyn Rice. The Rices were very involved in the Dover Christian Church as long-time Sunday school teachers. Harold was also an elder of the church and Evelyn was active in the Ladies Aid program.

Dorothy Roby Memorial Scholarship

Erin McGlocklin is the first recipient of this scholarship. She will be attending Indiana University to pursue a degree in elementary education. Friends and former students of Ms. Roby established this scholarship in her memory. She was a teacher for more than 60 years, teaching English and Latin at the high school and the PAGE (gifted) program at Pleasant View Elementary School. Carole Savitsky said of Miss Roby, "Her greatest contribution was herself. She gave her knowledge to the children, gave them an opportunity to be with someone who was truly a senior citizen-to understand that life goes on for a very long time. She really appreciated and had a keen understanding of what drove those children, and they gave her their respect."

Thomas G. Slama Scholarship Fund

Ashly Cumberworth, graduate of Zionsville Community High School, is the winner of this scholarship for students who are pursuing medical studies. Her plans are to attend the University of Notre Dame to become an orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Slama established this fund to help students who plan to study medical science and who need financial assistance. He wanted to do something for the community and its schools in acknowledgment of the many benefits he and his children had received.

David Spear Memorial Scholarship Courage to Change Award

William Sullivan is the first recipient of this scholarship available only to Lebanon High School students. He will be studying criminal justice at Tri-State University. To apply for this award, the student must have made a lifestyle change, which helped him to reach his full potential on the football field, in the classroom and in the community.

Courage to Care Award

Katrina Yeadon is the first recipient of this award also. IUPUI is her college of choice to pursue a major in medical imagining technology. To apply for this scholarship, the recipient made a lifestyle change, which helped encourage others to live up to their potential on the football field, in the classroom and in the community. The friends and family in memory of David Spear who lost his life in a tragic accident in 2000 established these two scholarships.

State Bank of Lizton Community Bankers Scholarship

Lindsay Terhune, Kristen Thrine, and Elizabeth Lumpkin were the Boone County residents who were the first recipients of this renewable scholarship. Lindsay is a graduate of Western Boone High School. She plans to study elementary education at Purdue University. Kristen graduated from Lebanon High School. DePauw University is her college of choice to pursue a degree on political science. Elizabeth, a graduate of Bethesda Christian School will be studying advertising at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Students are selected due to past academic performance and future potential, leadership, work experience, statement of career and educational aspirations and goals, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. The State Bank of Lizton's Board of Directors and officers established this scholarship.

Marjorie Stonehill-English, Journalism, Creative Arts Scholarship

Cassandra Berger, a graduate of Zionsville Community High School is this years recipient. This fall she plans to attend St. Louis University. Marjorie Stonehill established this scholarship for students who want to pursue careers in the fields of English, Journalism or the Creative Arts. A life-long resident of Zionsville, Mrs. Stonehill was able to achieve her own college experience through the help of scholarships and wants to assist other Boone County students in a similar manner.

Robert Stonehill Pre-Medical Scholarship

Emily Olberding, a Zionsville Community High School graduate will attend Tulane University this fall to study biology/pre-medicine degree. Established by Dr. Robert Stonehill, this scholarship was created for students who are pursuing careers in medicine. He also was able to pursue his educational goals and become professionally successful through the scholarships he received, and wants to help young people achieve similar success.

Superintendent's Stay-in-School Scholarship

Guy Curry is the recipient of this award. Purdue University is his college of choice. This scholarship is awarded to a Zionsville Community High School senior who has attended ZCHS for a minimum of two school years, who plans to pursue an altruistic career by seeking an initial bachelor's degree. Because so many scholarships are for only one year, and because all begin with the freshman year, this scholarship is unique; while it is awarded to a senior, it will not be received until the student is enrolled in his or her second year of college. Dr. Howard Hull, Jr., Zionsville Community School Corporation Superintendent, established this scholarship.

Harold Eugene Wagner Wrestling Scholarship

Aaron Davis is the first recipient of this award. He plans to study accounting when he attends the University of Indianapolis. The head wrestling coach of Zionsville Community High School makes recommendations to the Wagner family. The recipient must have participated in the Zionsville wrestling program and is likely to succeed at college or at a vocational school.

Washburn Scholarship

Jodi Fischer, graduate of West Lafayette Jr. Sr. High School received the Washburn Scholarship established by the late Mabel and Eugene Higgins. This scholarship is for a Tippecanoe County resident. Jodi will study to be a dietician at Indiana University. To be eligible for the Washburn Scholarship a student must be attending an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. Mabel began this scholarship in memory of her parents, William S. and Emma Washburn.

The Honorable Allen F. Wharry Memorial Scholarship

Adam Gaha was the first receipt of this scholarship. He is currently enrolled at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis and was a former Boone County resident. Judge Wharry was a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, Wabash College, IU, and the Indiana University of Law in Indianapolis. He was an attorney in Boone County for 30 years including serving in positions such as Boone County Circuit Court judge, interim judge in Howard Circuit Court, Zionsville Town Court judge, and Boone County Deputy Prosecutor. Friends and family of Judge Wharry established this scholarship.

Carl Witt Trust Scholarship

Sitarani Palomar, Lisa Radivan, and Justin Mohler were the three winners from the Boone County schools. Sitarani is a graduate of Lebanon High School and will pursue a career in communications and advertising at Pennsylvania State University. Lisa, a Zionsville graduate, is majoring in veterinary technology. Agriculture economics will be Justin's major. Both Lisa and Justin will attend Purdue University. Carl Witt, a life long resident of Boone County, worked on a family farm for twenty years and was a school board member who established this scholarship. One recipient from each Boone County high school was chosen for this award.

Zionsville Booster Club Scholarship

Billy Slama and Kylie Reed were the recipients of this scholarship. Kylie will attend Ball State University to pursue a degree in special education. Billy will study business and marketing at DePauw University. The Zionsville Booster Club established this scholarship for a Zionsville Community High School student who is actively involved in school athletics. Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees Scholarship Martha Elmore will attend Wake Forrest University to pursue a degree in health and exercise sciences. The trustees choose a student who has shown that he or she has significantly benefited from the academic opportunities and instructional excellence provided by the high school. Each applicant provided an essay on the topic "The teacher who has had the greatest impact on me."

Zionsville Optimist Club Scholarship

Stephanie Lefebvre was this year's recipient of this award. She plans to attend the University of Rochester and study biology and psychology. The Zionsville Optimist Club established this scholarship to be awarded to a student who best exhibits character, leadership, and motivation, as well as having a financial need.

How to Start a Scholarship

Many donors create endowed Scholarship Funds to honor or memorialize an individual, or to serve a specific purpose that is important to the donor. Scholarship can enable students to pursue traditional higher education or vocational training. Income from the endowment provides scholarships each year.

Ways to give to start a scholarship:

  1. Give Cash or Securities
    All donation are tax deductible. The gift of highly appreciated stocks are deductible in the full amount of the stock on the day it was given without the donor paying capital gain taxes.
  2. Include the Community Foundation in your will or estate plan
    A bequest may be for a specific amount or for the residue or any portion of the estate.
  3. Give a gift of life insurance
    Creating a major gift at a relatively low cost to the donor. A tax receipt is issued for the premiums paid by the donor when the Community Foundation is named the owner of a new or existing policy.
  4. Transfer existing private foundation or charitable trust
    Administrators may find it practical and economical to transfer assets to a named fund within the Community Foundation, assuring the intent of the fund in perpetuity.
  5. Set up an annuity, charitable remainder trust or other planned giving instrument
    To suit your financial needs and benefit your favorite charity through The Community Foundation.
