The Community Foundation of Boone County awarded $175,000 in scholarships to Boone County students this spring.

Among the good works of the Community Foundation of Boone County is the number of scholarships and gift certificates awarded to outstanding residents of Boone County. In this issue, the 2002 scholars and their awards are introduced.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships

The three winners from fifty six applicants were Aaron Lewis and Nicholas Kramer of Zionsville Community High School, and William Hiatt of Lebanon High School. Both Aaron and Nick will attend Purdue University. Aaron plans to study psychology towards a career as a Christian counselor. Nick will major in biology and continue in the field of medicine. Indiana University is the school of choice for Bill where he will pursue a major in biochemistry or genetics. Each of these students will receive full tuition, required fees and a special allocation for required books and equipment for four years.

Eight additional students from three Boone County schools were finalists. They were: from Lebanon High School, Leslie O'Brien and Matt Grieger; from Western Boone, Joshua Potter, Kurtis Threlkeld, Whitney Sewell and Stephanie Kurasiewicz; and from Zionsville, Ann Scott and Amanda Lowell. To choose the final recipients was a difficult decision for the committee since all of the students interviewed were articulate, goal oriented and successful. Gift certificates for college supplies were given to the remaining eight finalists.

American Legion Post 79-Jack Clark Scholarship Fund

Alisha Borcherding, Amanda Higgins, and Zachary Zeller were this year's recipients. Amanda and Alicia graduated from Zionsville Community High School while Zach was a graduate of Pike High School. Amanda plans to attend Ball State University. IUPUI is the college of choice for Alisha where she will major in new media, while Zach will study aviation flight at Vincennes University. The Legion chose them for their commitment to their communities. This scholarship was established with proceeds from the sale of property that was left by Jack Clark to Post 79 of the American Legion, Zionsville.

Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship

Mike Johnston received the Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship. He made a significant contribution to the Zionsville Community High School's athletic program by being involved in tennis and basketball. Mike plans on continuing his education at Indiana University in sports communication and broadcasting. This scholarship was established in memory of Tom Bauman who excelled in all aspects of his life prior to his untimely death in 1986. He was a 1981 graduate of Zionsville who made a major contribution to athletics.

Ralph F. & Katherine L. Beam Family Scholarship

Megan Moore was the recipient of this scholarship. She will be attending Ball State University to study medical technology. Mr. & Mrs. Beam, long time residents of Jamestown established this renewable scholarship with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Boone County to provide financial assistance toward college expenses of a Western Boone graduate.

Ben Brimmer Arts Scholarship

This scholarship will be given to a student from Zionsville Community High School who will be studying art in college or vocational school, and who has been employed in the Zionsville area. Brian Schmutzler, a 2000 Zionsville graduate helped to establish this fund in memory of his friend, Ben Brimmer.

Boone County Agriculture Scholarship

Devin Cunningham graduated from Lebanon High School and plans to attend Purdue University to study pre-veterinary medicine. She is an eight year member of Boone County 4-H. George and Nancy Morton, in collaboration with Frontier Co-op established this scholarship for students who are interested in agriculture or related fields.

Ron Bush Family Scholarship

Ashley Richardson was the recipient of this scholarship available only to Western Boone graduates. Indiana State University is her school of choice and she plans to pursue a degree in athletic training. To be chosen as a recipient, you must have been a 4-H member in Boone County. Ashley was a ten year member of 4-H. The Bushes established this scholarship in memory of their son, James Ronald Bush, a local area farmer and a 1970 graduate of Granville Wells. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.

Jim & Frances Capps Scholarship

Jeremy Faught was this year's recipient of the Capps scholarship. Jeremy will attend Southwest Texas State to study computer science. His advice to other students is "Work hard & study hard. Do the little things right to make the big things happen." The Capps scholarship is given to a qualified student of Brownwood High School in Brownwood, Texas, who is deserving of financial assistance and who is likely to succeed as a college or university or vocational/technical student. John and Charlene Roth established the scholarship fund in memory of Charlene's parents.

Edward K. Castetter Memorial Award

Leslie O'Brien, a recent graduate of Lebanon High School, won this award. Each principal from the three Boone County high schools nominates one student from his or her school who exhibits a positive attitude, dedication, preserving, pride and leadership. Leslie plans to major in child psychology and minor in vocal performance at Ball State University. The award was established in memory and honor of Edward K. Castetter who attended Thorntown High School. He played a very active leadership role in the community, serving as a board member of Witham Hospital Foundation, a member of the Thorntown Lions Club, a member of Boone County Leadership, and a Trustee for Boone County.

Crossmann Communities Scholarship

Aaron Wilhoite was the recipient of this scholarship available only to graduating seniors of Lebanon High School. Aaron will be attending Purdue University to study business construction management. This scholarship was established with funds from the home building business of Crossmann Communities for students who will be studying structural engineering, architecture, building trades, drafting, business, finance, accounting, real estate, or other field related to building trades.

The Entrepreneur Scholarship Fund ­ in Honor of Lloyd & Jane Taylor

Brian Hand, a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, plans to pursue a business management degree at Purdue University. He has already exhibited entrepreneurship skills with his lawn care business, which is in its fourth year of existence. Jeff and Benita Thomasson established this scholarship. Jeff was a former Zionsville resident and graduate of Zionsville Community High School. As a high school student, Jeff worked for Mr. Taylor at Taylor Oil in Zionsville and credits Lloyd Taylor with encouraging him to pursue his education and business goals. He wanted to honor this couple who had positively influenced his young life, and he started this scholarship fund in their honor.

Homer and Gwendolen Fix Memorial Scholarship

James (Dustin) Smith and Kristina Jones were the recipients of this award. Dustin plans to attend the University of Southern Indiana and major in philosophy. Kristina will major in business/law at the Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. They both have participated in the athletic programs of Zionsville Community Middle School, and continued such participation through graduation from Zionsville Community High School. Kristina was involved in swimming, soccer, cross country and track; while, Dustin participated in track, diving and football. Each spring a euchre tournament is held to raise funds for the scholarship, which was established by Sam Fix in memory of his parents Homer and Gwendolen. Sam retired in 1994 from Zionsville Community High School where he served as a teacher, coach and athletic director.

Sam Fix Scholarship

Four students were chosen as recipients of this scholarship. They were: Rebecca Harris, Kelly Tilford, Amanda Lowell and Sarah Loker. Rebecca will be pursuing a career in psychology when she attends Indiana University. Anderson University is the school of choice for Kelly where she plans to receive a degree in accounting. Amanda will attend Hanover College to study pre-med/telecommunications. Indiana University is Sarah's college of choice to receive a major in business. Sam established this scholarship to award deserving students scholarships for continuing their education past high school.

Todd Getty Mental Attitude Memorial Scholarship

Meghan Overmyer, a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, was chosen to receive this award by the varsity head coaches, principal and athletic director. She will attend Indiana University to major in psychology. She is an athlete who possesses a cheerful, positive attitude, strong work ethic, and good sportsmanship and is a friend to all, which were characteristics of Todd. Todd W. Getty was a junior at Zionsville High School when his friends and family established this fund in his memory.

Thomas E. Gruhl Scholarship Fund

Alisha Borcherding and Chad Cravens were the recipients of this scholarship. Alisha plans to attend IUPUI to study new media. Chad will be continuing his studies at Purdue University towards a career in electrical engineering. The Board of Directors of Mid State Bank established this educational scholarship fund in honor of the retirement of Tom Gruhl as bank president in March 1993. This award is made annually to a Boone County resident, enrolled or graduated from Zionsville Community High School or a contract teacher or administrator employed by Eagle-Union School Corporation. A student recipient must be enrolled and accepted for post high school education or training at an accredited institution with preference given to students attending Franklin College. For a school staff recipient, awards includes seminar/workshop/conference enrollment and attendance.

Florence Gruver Memorial Scholarship

Bernadine Patten of Lebanon Community High School was awarded this scholarship designed for students who are pursuing careers in teaching. In high school, she was an art cadet teacher at Stokes and Central Elementaries. Bernadine plans to study at Hanover College and major in art and education. Robert V. Copeland established this annual, renewable scholarship in memory of his friend, Florence Gruver, who died in 1994, and who had been a teacher and a fine and true lady.

Arthur & Nancy Hansen Scholarship Award for Science & Mathematics

David Kelvin, senior, Ryan Nasserizafar, junior, Christine Donahue sophomore and Travis Allen, freshman were the students chosen to receive this scholarship. Kelvin will attend Rice University to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. Dr. Arthur Hansen established this award, which is given is given yearly to one student in each grade attending Zionsville Community High School for their excellence in science and mathematics.

Buren Fund Scholarship of the William Higgins Trust

Levi Deaton of Lebanon High School, and Johnathan Schaumberg of Zionsville Community High School were recipients of this award. IUPUI is the school of choice for Levi to pursue a degree in business/accounting. Johnathan plans to obtain an engineering degree from Valparaiso University. William Higgins established this scholarship through a trust. It is named in memory of his son, Buren, to aid worthy young men in pursuing a college education.

Higgins Scholarship

This is one of two scholarships established by the late Mabel and Eugene Higgins. The Higgins Scholarship is for a Boone County resident. To be eligible for the scholarship a student must be attending an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. In 2001, Mabel passed away at the age of 97. She had a love of education and had been a math teacher in Knightstown and Greenfield. She and her husband farmed in the Lebanon community for forty years. Mabel served her community as a member of the Board of Directors for the Citizens Bank & Trust Company. Memberships included the United Methodist Church in Franklin; and in Lebanon the Cooking Club, Psi Iota Xi Auxiliary, and Ulen Country Club. She will be greatly missed.

Darrell A. Portell 4-H Memorial Scholarship

Katricia Jenkins, graduate of Sheridan High School, is the winner of this award. The University of Indianapolis is Katricia's choice for college. She will study business administration. Recipients of this award have been active in 4-H for the last three years of eligibility and possess good leadership skills. Barbara Portell established this scholarship in memory of her late husband Darrell A. Portell.

Pratt Family Fund Scholarship

Meghan Overmeyer is this years scholarship recipient. She will be attending Indiana University to study psychology. She was an active participant in basketball, cross country, track and tennis. The scholarship is awarded to a senior girl at Zionsville Community High School who has shown the highest degree of leadership and initiative in scholarship and athletics. Bing and Suzi Pratt to honor their daughters, Kara and Lisa established this scholarship.

Psi Iota Xi-Omega Chapter Malpas Scholarship

Jessica Smith received this award. She plans to pursue a pre-pharmacy degree at Purdue University. This scholarship was established by Mr. Malpas to be awarded by Psi Iota Xi, Omega Chapter to a graduating female from Lebanon High School. It is preferred, but not mandatory, that applicants major in art, literature, music, or speech and hearing.

Western Boone-Pliny & Mildred Randall Scholarship

Sara Allen, Alicia Sharp and Ashley Richardson are this years recipients. Sara will be attending Brigham Young University to study agronomy and environmental science. Alicia is pursuing a apparel design/fashion merchandising degree at Ball State University. Ashley will be studying at Indiana State University towards a degree in athletic training. Students must be attending Western Boone High School and be in good standing with documented academic successes. Mildred and Pliny Randall, who farmed in northern Boone County and lived near Thorntown established this scholarship. Upon their death, they directed that a general scholarship fund be established for students at four area high schools. The Community Foundation of Boone County administers the scholarship for students attending Western Boone High School.

Harold and Evelyn Rice Scholarship

This scholarship is for a young man who is an active member of the Dover Christian Church and is enrolled in a Christian Bible College for the purpose of preparing for ministry. Morris D. and Patricia Ramsey established this fund in honor of her parents Harold and Evelyn Rice. The Rices were very involved in the Dover Christian Church as long-time Sunday school teachers. Harold was also an elder of the church and Evelyn was active in the Ladies Aid program.

Dorothy Roby Memorial Scholarship

Sandra French and Elizabeth Williams shared this scholarship. Sandra will be attending Purdue University to pursue a degree in elementary education. She says " I can't wait to teach other children". Indiana University is Elizabeth's choice of school where she will also major in education. Friends and former students of Ms. Roby established this scholarship in her memory. She was a teacher for more than 60 years, teaching English and Latin at the high school and the PAGE (gifted) program at Pleasant View Elementary School. Carole Savitsky said of Miss Roby, "Her greatest contribution was herself. She gave her knowledge to the children, gave them an opportunity to be with someone who was truly a senior citizen-to understand that life goes on for a very long time. She really appreciated and had a keen understanding of what drove those children, and they gave her their respect."

Thomas G. Slama Scholarship Fund

Amy Preston, graduate of Zionsville Community High School, is the recipient of this scholarship for students who are pursuing medical studies. Her plans are to attend Taylor University to major in biology towards a career as a physical therapist. Dr. Slama established this fund to help students who plan to study medical science and who need financial assistance. He wanted to do something for the community and its schools in acknowledgment of the many benefits he and his children had received.

David Spear Memorial Scholarship Courage to Care Award

To apply for this scholarship, the recipient made a lifestyle change, which helped encourage others to live up to their potential on the football field, in the classroom and in the community. The friends and family in memory of David Spear who lost his life in a tragic accident in 2000 established these two scholarships.

Courage to Change Award

Michael Shirley and Richard (Zach) Martin are the recipients of this scholarship available only to Lebanon High School students. Both Zach and Michael will be attending Indiana University. Michael will be studying to become an athletic trainer while Zach plans to major in communications. Michael states "I feel honored to receive this since David was in my class and on our football team and now I can take a piece of him with me." To apply for this award, the student must have made a lifestyle change, which helped him to reach his full potential on the football field, in the classroom and in the community.

State Bank of Lizton Community Bankers Scholarship

Whitney Sewell and Amber Groth were the Boone County residents who were the recipients of this renewable scholarship. Whitney is a graduate of Western Boone High School. She plans to study fine arts/business at Indiana University. Amber graduated from Lebanon High School. Purdue University is her college of choice to pursue a degree in child psychology. Students are selected due to past academic performance and future potential, leadership, work experience, statement of career and educational aspirations and goals, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. The State Bank of Lizton's Board of Directors and officers established this scholarship.

Marjorie Stonehill-English, Journalism, Creative Arts Scholarship

Marjorie Stonehill established this scholarship for students who want to pursue careers in the fields of English, Journalism or the Creative Arts. A life-long resident of Zionsville, Mrs. Stonehill was able to achieve her own college experience through the help of scholarships and wants to assist other Boone County students in a similar manner.

Robert Stonehill Pre-Medical Scholarship

Established by Dr. Robert Stonehill, this scholarship was created for students who are pursuing careers in medicine. He also was able to pursue his educational goals and become professionally successful through the scholarships he received, and wants to help young people achieve similar success.

Superintendent's Stay-in-School Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a Zionsville Community High School senior who has attended ZCHS for a minimum of two school years, who plans to pursue an altruistic career by seeking an initial bachelor's degree. Because so many scholarships are for only one year, and because all begin with the freshman year, this scholarship is unique; while it is awarded to a senior, it will not be received until the student is enrolled in his or her second year of college. Dr. Howard Hull, Jr., Zionsville Community School Corporation Superintendent, established this scholarship.

Harold Eugene Wagner Wrestling Scholarship

James (Ryan) Wagner is the recipient of this award. He plans to study exercise science when he attends the University of Indianapolis. The head wrestling coach of Zionsville Community High School makes recommendations to the Wagner family. The recipient must have participated in the Zionsville wrestling program and is likely to succeed at college or at a vocational school.

Washburn Scholarship

This scholarship is for a Tippecanoe County resident. To be eligible for the Washburn Scholarship a student must be attending an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. Mabel began this scholarship in memory of her parents, William S. and Emma Washburn.

Allen F. Wharry Memorial Scholarship

Homer Faucett III was the recipient of this scholarship. He is currently enrolled at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis and resides in Jamestown. Judge Wharry was a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, Wabash College, IU, and the Indiana University of Law in Indianapolis. He was an attorney in Boone County for 30 years including serving in positions such as Boone County Circuit Court judge, interim judge in Howard Circuit Court, Zionsville Town Court judge, and Boone County Deputy Prosecutor. Friends and family of Judge Wharry established this scholarship.

Carl Witt Trust Scholarship

Amber Groth and Brian Hand were the two winners from the Boone County schools. Amber is a graduate of Lebanon High School and will pursue a career in child psychology. Brian, a Zionsville graduate, is majoring in business management. Both Amber and Brian will be attending Purdue University. Carl Witt, a life long resident of Boone County, worked on a family farm for twenty years and was a school board member who established this scholarship.

Zionsville Booster Club Scholarship

Meghan Overmeyer and Nick Noel were the recipients of this scholarship. Meghan will attend Indiana University to pursue a degree in psychology. Nick will study at Ohio Wesleyan. The Zionsville Booster Club established this scholarship for a Zionsville Community High School student who is actively involved in school athletics.

Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees Scholarship

Amy Preston will attend Taylor University to pursue a degree in biology toward a career in physical therapy. The trustees choose a student who has shown that he or she has significantly benefited from the academic opportunities and instructional excellence provided by the high school. Amy stated, "Zionsville schools helped me realize life lessons. Through this award, and their consistent leadership, I am sure that my future is well grounded."

Zionsville Optimist Club Scholarship

Ann Scott was this year's recipient of this award. She plans to attend Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan and study psychology. The Zionsville Optimist Club established this scholarship to be awarded to a student who best exhibits character, leadership, and motivation, as well as having a financial need.
