The Community Foundation of Boone County awarded over $360,000 in scholarships to Boone County students this spring.

Among the good works of the Community Foundation of Boone County is the number of scholarships and gift certificates awarded to outstanding residents of Boone County. In this issue, the 2003 scholars and their awards are introduced.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships

The three winners from forty four applicants were Cameron Husk and Mallory Michalke of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School, and Adam McLean of Lebanon High School. Mallory will be attending Purdue University to major in science toward a career in pediatric dentistry. Rose-Hulman is the college of choice for Cameron where he plans to pursue engineering. Adam will attend DePauw University to study journalism and advertising.Each of these students will receive full tuition, required fees and a special allocation for required books and equipment for four years.

Ten additional students from four Boone County schools were finalists. They were: from Lebanon High School, Ryan Harrison, Cory Heck, Matthew Greene, and Rachel Cumberbatch; from Western Boone, Kyle Mohler and Kimberly Barker; from Zionsville, Stephanie Kessel, Elizabeth Burgard, and Haley Hypes; and from Sheridan, Katherine Carr.To choose the final recipients was a difficult decision for the committee since all of the students interviewed were articulate, goal oriented and successful. Gift certificates for college supplies were given to the remaining ten finalists.

American Legion Post 79-Jack Clark Scholarship Fund

Ryan Stephens, Brandon Lapehn, Amanda Higgins and Steven Webb were this year’s recipients. Ryan and Brandon graduated from Zionsville Community High School while Amanda and Steven are currently attending college. Ryan plans to attend Wabash College to major in pre-medicine. Indiana University is the college of choice for Brandon. The Legion chose them for their commitment to their communities. This scholarship was established with proceeds from the sale of property that was left by Jack Clark to Post 79 of the American Legion, Zionsville.

Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship

Daniel Houchens received the Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship. He made a significant contribution to the Zionsville Community High School’s athletic program by running on the cross country and track and field teams.Daniel plans on continuing his education at Indiana University in business/finance.This scholarship was established in memory of Tom Bauman who excelled in all aspects of his life prior to his untimely death in 1986.He was a 1981 graduate of Zionsville who made a major contribution to athletics.

Ralph F. & Katherine L. Beam Family Scholarship

Tyler Lee was the recipient of this scholarship.He will be attending Tri-State University to study physical education and social studies or sports management.Mr. & Mrs. Beam, long time residents of Jamestown established this renewable scholarship with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Boone County to provide financial assistance toward college expenses of a Western Boone graduate.

Ben Brimmer Arts Scholarship

This scholarship will be given to a student from Zionsville Community High School who will be studying art in college or at a vocational school, and who has been employed in the Zionsville area. Brian Schmutzler, a 2000 Zionsville graduate helped to establish this fund in memory of his friend, Ben Brimmer.

Boone County Agriculture Scholarship

Daniel Haberlin and Rachel Cumberbatch were the recipients of this scholarship. Daniel and Rachel graduated from Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School.Both have also been actively involved in the 4-H program and plan now to attend Purdue University to study pre-veterinary medicine. The citizens of Boone County established this scholarship for students who are interested in agriculture or related fields.

Ron Bush Family Scholarship

Robert Farrow was the recipient of this scholarship available only to Western Boone graduates. DePauw University is his school of choice and he plans to pursue a degree in pre-medicine.  To be chosen as a recipient, you must have been a 4-H member in Boone County. Robert was a ten year member of 4-H. The Bushes established this scholarship in memory of their son, James Ronald Bush, a local area farmer and a 1970 graduate of Granville Wells. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.

Jim & Frances Capps Scholarship

Taylor Franklin was this year’s recipient of the Capps scholarship. Taylor will attend TCU to study business/English. The Capps scholarship is given to a qualified student of Brownwood High School in Brownwood, Texas, who is deserving of financial assistance and who is likely to succeed as a college or university or vocational/technical student. John and Charlene Roth established the scholarship fund in memory of Charlene’s parents.

Edward K. Castetter Memorial Award

Drew Galvin, a recent graduate of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School, won this award. Each principal from the three Boone County high schools nominates one student from his or her school who exhibits a positive attitude, dedication, preserving, pride and leadership. Drew plans to major in automotive service management and will attend Lincoln Technical Institute. The award was established in memory and honor of Edward K. Castetter who attended Thorntown High School. He played a very active leadership role in the community, serving as a board member of Witham Hospital Foundation, a member of the Thorntown Lions Club, a member of Boone County Leadership, and a Trustee for Boone County.

Aaron & Cathy Coates Vocal Music Scholarship

Lindsay Van Dyke was the first recipient of this award. She was a member of the ZCHS vocal music program for the last three years. Her plans are to study theatre design and technology at Ball State University. This scholarship was established by the Zionsville Community High School show choir parents’ organizations: Royalaires and Choralaires.

Richard H. Crosser Memorial Scholarship for Lebanon Schools

This scholarship was established with funds from the home building business of Crossmann Communities for students from Lebanon High School who will be studying structural engineering, architecture, building trades, drafting, business, finance, accounting, real estate, or other field related to building trades. The Crossmann Communities Scholarship was renamed in 2002 in memory of the past president Richard Crosser.

Richard H. Crosser Memorial Scholarship for Zionsville Schools

Abigail Clark was awarded this one time scholarship. She will attend Indiana University to major in interior design. This scholarship was established with funds from Trinity Homes, a part of Crossmann Communities for students from Zionsville High School who will be studying structural engineering, architecture, building trades, drafting, business, finance, accounting, real estate, or other field related to building trades.

The Entrepreneur Scholarship Fund – in Honor of Lloyd & Jane Taylor

Katherine McWhorter, a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, plans to pursue a degree in management at Purdue University. She has already exhibited entrepreneurship skills with her business “Kookies” by Katie at the age of seven. Jeff and Benita Thomasson established this scholarship. Jeff was a former Zionsville resident and graduate of Zionsville Community High School. As a high school student, Jeff worked for Mr. Taylor at Taylor Oil in Zionsville and credits Lloyd Taylor with encouraging him to pursue his education and business goals. He wanted to honor this couple who had positively influenced his young life, and he started this scholarship fund in their honor.

Homer and Gwendolen Fix Memorial Scholarship

Evan Hardin, David Rabb, and Haley Hypes were the recipients of this award. Evan plans to attend Ball State University and major in business management. IUPUI is the college of choice for David where he will pursue business also. Haley will study construction management at Purdue University. They have all participated in the athletic programs of Zionsville Community Middle School, and continued participation through graduation from Zionsville Community High School. Evan was involved in football, wrestling, baseball and basketball; while, David participated in soccer, basketball and baseball and Haley was involved in golf, softball, and basketball. Each spring a euchre tournament is held to raise funds for the scholarship, which was established by Sam Fix in memory of his parents Homer and Gwendolen. Sam retired in 1994 from Zionsville Community High School where he served as a teacher, coach and athletic director.

Sam Fix Scholarship

Sam established this scholarship to award deserving students scholarships for continuing their education past high school.

Todd Getty Mental Attitude Memorial Scholarship

Lauren Ostendorf, a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, was chosen to receive this award by the varsity head coaches, principal and athletic director. She will attend Duke University in Durham, North Carolina to major in economics.   She was an athlete who possesses a cheerful, positive attitude, strong work ethic, and good sportsmanship and was a friend to all, which were characteristics of Todd. Todd W. Getty was a junior at Zionsville High School when his friends and family established this fund in his memory.

Thomas E. Gruhl Scholarship Fund

Seven Brooksby and Chad Cravens were the recipients of this scholarship. Seven plans to attend Purdue University to study family and consumer science. Chad will be continuing his studies at Purdue University towards a career in electrical engineering. The Board of Directors of Mid State Bank, now National City, established this educational scholarship fund in honor of the retirement of Tom Gruhl as bank president in March 1993. This award is made annually to a Boone County resident, enrolled or graduated from Zionsville Community High School or a contract teacher or administrator employed by Zionsville School Corporation. A student recipient must be enrolled and accepted for post high school education or training at an accredited institution with preference given to students attending Franklin College. For a school staff recipient, awards include seminar/workshop/conference enrollment and attendance.

Florence Gruver Memorial Scholarship

Ashley Overfield graduate of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School was awarded this scholarship designed for students who are pursuing careers in teaching. Robert V. Copeland established this annual, renewable scholarship in memory of his friend, Florence Gruver, who died in 1994, and who had been a teacher and a fine and true lady.

Arthur & Nancy Hansen Scholarship Award for Science & Mathematics

Ryan Nasserizafar senior, Molly Schaus junior, Ryan McCarthy sophomore and Joel Love, freshman were the students chosen to receive this scholarship. Ryan will attend Duke University to pursue a degree in biochemistry. Dr. Arthur Hansen established this award, which is given is given yearly to one student in each grade attending Zionsville Community High School for their excellence in science and mathematics.

Buren Fund Scholarship of the William Higgins Trust

Dustin Lukes of Lebanon High School and Daniel Haberlin of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School were recipients of this award. Indiana University is the school of choice for Dustin to pursue a degree in business. Daniel plans to obtain a pre-veterinary science degree from Purdue University. William Higgins established this scholarship through a trust. It is named in memory of his son, Buren, to aid worthy young men in pursuing a college education.

Higgins Scholarship

This is one of two scholarships established by the late Mabel and Eugene Higgins. The Higgins Scholarship is for a Boone County resident. To be eligible for the scholarship a student must be attending an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. In 2001, Mabel passed away at the age of 97. She had a love of education and had been a math teacher in Knightstown and Greenfield. She and her husband farmed in the Lebanon community for forty years. Mabel served her community as a member of the Board of Directors for the Citizens Bank & Trust Company. Memberships included the United Methodist Church in Franklin; and in Lebanon the Cooking Club, Psi Iota Xi Auxiliary, and Ulen Country Club.

Darrell A. Portell 4-H Memorial Scholarship

Craig Walker, graduate of Zionsville Community High School, received this award. Indiana University is Craig’s choice for college and will study biology. Craig was a 10 year 4-H member. Recipients of this award have been active in 4-H for the last three years of eligibility and possess good leadership skills. Barbara Portell established this scholarship in memory of her late husband Darrell A. Portell.

Pratt Family Fund Scholarship

Lauren Ostendorf is this year’s scholarship recipient. She will be attending Duke University to study economics. She was an active participant in two sports: volleyball and track. In addition, she was the ZCHS valedictorian, National Honor Society president, member of student council, member of various clubs and academic teams. The scholarship is awarded to a senior girl at Zionsville Community High School who has shown the highest degree of leadership and initiative in scholarship and athletics. Bing and Suzi Pratt to honor their daughters, Kara and Lisa established this scholarship.

Psi Iota Xi-Omega Chapter Malpas Scholarship

Jenna Wright received this award.  She plans to pursue an English education degree at Ball State University. This scholarship was established by Mr. Malpas to be awarded by Psi Iota Xi, Omega Chapter to a graduating female from Lebanon High School. It is preferred, but not mandatory, that applicants major in art, literature, music, or speech and hearing.

Western Boone-Pliny & Mildred Randall Scholarship

Josh Schrier, Amanda Worrell and Drew Galvin are this years recipients. Josh will be attending George Washington University in Washington, DC to study international affairs. Amanda is pursuing a radiography degree at IUPUI. Drew will be studying at Lincoln Tech towards a degree in automotive service management. Students must be attending Western Boone High School and be in good standing with documented academic successes. Mildred and Pliny Randall, who farmed in northern Boone County and lived near Thorntown, established this scholarship. Upon their death, they directed that a general scholarship fund be established for students at four area high schools. The Community Foundation of Boone County administers the scholarship for students attending Western Boone High School.

Harold and Evelyn Rice Scholarship

This scholarship is for a young man who is an active member of the Dover Christian Church and is enrolled in a Christian Bible College for the purpose of preparing for ministry. Morris D. and Patricia Ramsey established this fund in honor of her parents Harold and Evelyn Rice. The Rices were very involved in the Dover Christian Church as long-time Sunday school teachers. Harold was also an elder of the church and Evelyn was active in the Ladies Aid program.

Dorothy Roby Memorial Scholarship

Friends and former students of Ms. Roby established this scholarship in her memory. She was a teacher for more than 60 years, teaching English and Latin at the high school and the PAGE (gifted) program at Pleasant View Elementary School. Carole Savitsky said of Miss Roby, “Her greatest contribution was herself. She gave her knowledge to the children, gave them an opportunity to be with someone who was truly a senior citizen-to understand that life goes on for a very long time. She really appreciated and had a keen understanding of what drove those children, and they gave her their respect.”

Thomas G. Slama Scholarship Fund

Karen McLaughlin, graduate of Zionsville Community High School, is the recipient of this scholarship for students who are pursuing medical studies.  Her plans are to attend Hanover College to major in biology/pre-medicine.  Dr. Slama established this fund to help students who plan to study medical science and who need financial assistance.  He wanted to do something for the community and its schools in acknowledgment of the many benefits he and his children had received.

David Spear Memorial Scholarship: Courage to Change Award

Jeffrey Smock is the recipient of this scholarship available only to Lebanon High School students.  He will be attending Indiana University.  To apply for this award, the student must have made a lifestyle change, which helped him to reach his full potential on the football field, in the classroom and in the community.

State Bank of Lizton Community Bankers Scholarship

Ryan Harrison and John Saxton were the Boone County residents who were the recipients of this renewable scholarship. Ryan is a graduate of Lebanon High School. He plans to study pre-medicine and music at Indiana University. John graduated from Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School. The University of Chicago is his college of choice to pursue a degree in English Literature. Students are selected due to past academic performance and future potential, leadership, work experience, statement of career and educational aspirations and goals, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. The State Bank of Lizton’s Board of Directors and officers established this scholarship.

Marjorie Stonehill-English, Journalism, Creative Arts Scholarship

Ross Waitt is the recipient of the Marjorie Stonehill-English, Journalism, and Creative Arts Scholarship. Ross plans on attending Purdue University to major in creative writing. Marjorie established this scholarship for students who want to pursue careers in the fields of English, Journalism or the Creative Arts. A life-long resident of Zionsville, Mrs. Stonehill was able to achieve her own college experience through the help of scholarships and wants to assist other Boone County students in a similar manner.

Robert Stonehill Pre-Medical Scholarship

Established by the late Dr. Robert Stonehill, this scholarship was created for students who are pursuing careers in medicine. He also was able to pursue his educational goals and become professionally successful through the scholarships he received, and wants to help young people achieve similar success.

Superintendent’s Stay-in-School Scholarship

Daniel Houchens is the recipient of the Superintendent’s Stay-In-School Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a Zionsville Community High School senior who has attended ZCHS for a minimum of two school years, who plans to pursue an altruistic career by seeking an initial bachelor’s degree. Because so many scholarships are for only one year, and because all begin with the freshman year, this scholarship is unique; while it is awarded to a senior, it will not be received until the student is enrolled in his or her second year of college. Dr. Howard Hull, Jr., Zionsville Community School Corporation Superintendent established this scholarship.

Village Photo: Most Outstanding Photography Student Scholarship

Megan Williams was the first recipient of this one time award. She will be attending Purdue University to study interior design. This scholarship was established by Robert Shafer of Village Photo for a junior or senior student at ZCHS who excelled in photography. As the recipient of this award, Megan held a photo show at Village Photo in June 2003.

Harold Eugene Wagner Wrestling Scholarship

Brandon Lapehn is the recipient of this award. He plans to attend Indiana University. This scholarship is given to a student who was a four year participant in a wrestling program with a minimum of three years in the ZCHS program. In addition, the recipient earned a letter in wrestling 2 of his 4 years in high school. The recipient must have participated in the Zionsville wrestling program and is likely to succeed at college or at a vocational school.

Washburn Scholarship

This scholarship is for a Tippecanoe County resident. To be eligible for the Washburn Scholarship a student must be attending an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. The late Mabel and Eugene Higgins began this scholarship in memory of her parents, William S. and Emma Washburn.

Allen F. Wharry Memorial Scholarship

Jerry Smith was the recipient of this scholarship. He is currently enrolled at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. Judge Wharry was a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, Wabash College, IU, and the Indiana University of Law in Indianapolis. He was an attorney in Boone County for 30 years including serving in positions such as Boone County Circuit Court judge, interim judge in Howard Circuit Court, Zionsville Town Court judge, and Boone County Deputy Prosecutor. Friends and family of Judge Wharry established this scholarship.

Carl Witt Trust Scholarship

Kyle Mohler and Lauren Ostendorf were the two winners from the Boone County schools. Kyle is a graduate of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School and will pursue a degree in biochemistry at Purdue University. Lauren, a Zionsville graduate, is majoring in economics. Carl Witt, a life long resident of Boone County, worked on a family farm for twenty years and was a school board member who established this scholarship.

Zionsville Booster Club Scholarship

Noah Lucas and Laura Ostendorf were the recipients of this scholarship. Noah will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to pursue a degree in information technology. Laura will study at Duke University. Noah actively participated in football and lacrosse; while Laura was in volleyball and track. The Zionsville Booster Club established this scholarship for a Zionsville Community High School student who is actively involved in school athletics.

Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees Scholarship

Elizabeth Burgard will attend Vanderbilt University to pursue a degree in vocal performance and biology. The trustees choose a student who has shown that he or she has significantly benefited from the academic opportunities and instructional excellence provided by the high school.

Zionsville Optimist Club Scholarship

Both Hillary Gangstad and Jacob Howerton were this years scholarship recipients. The Zionsville Optimist Club established these scholarships to be awarded to students who best exhibit character, leadership, and motivation, as well as having a financial need. In the past, the Zionsville Optimist Club only offered one scholarship. In the spring of 2003, a second scholarship became available for a senior who plans to obtain an associate degree or a vocational technical certificate.
