Among the good works of the Community Foundation of Boone County is the number of scholarships and gift certificates awarded to outstanding residents of Boone County. In this issue, the 2004 scholars and their awards are introduced.
The three winners from fifty two applicants were Zachary Einterz of Zionsville Community High School, Lauren Prittie of Lebanon High School and Saige Rutledge of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School. Zach, son of Robert and Lea Anne Einterz, will be attending the University Of Notre Dame to major in economics toward a career urban planning. DePauw University is the college of choice for Lauren, daughter of John and Lisa Prittie, where she plans on pursuing a degree in English. Saige, daughter of Gary and Quella Rutledge, will attend Butler University to study Spanish education. Both Lauren & Saige want to be teachers. Each of these students will receive full tuition, required fees and a special allocation for required books and equipment for four years. The value of these three scholarships total over $350,000.
Nine additional students from four Boone County schools were finalists. They were: from Lebanon High School, Kristen Sargent, daughter of Vernon Sargent and Vanessa Sargent, Tasha Searles, daughter of Doug and Mary Beth Searles, Katie Brown, daughter of Mark and Lisa Brown and Nicholas Hedge, son of Cloyce and Christine Hedge; from Western Boone, Courtney Hull, daughter of Ken and Tamara Hull, Zachary Keller, son of Steven Keller and Cynthia Stevens, and Laura Hill, daughter of Stephen and Rita Hill; from Zionsville, Rachel Heneghan, daughter of Mike and Lorie Heneghan; and from Sheridan, Carrie Ann Hedge, daughter of Ken and Christine Hedge. To choose the final recipients was a difficult decision for the committee since all of the students interviewed were articulate, goal oriented and successful. Gift certificates for college supplies were given to the remaining nine finalists.
Victor Gootee, son of Paul & Janice Gootee and James Sallee, son of Frank & Anita Sallee were this year’s recipients. Both graduated from Zionsville Community High School and plan to further their education at Purdue University. Victor will major in the health sciences field, while James is pursuing an astronautical engineering degree. The Legion chose them for their commitment to their communities. This scholarship was established with proceeds from the sale of property that was left by Jack Clark to Post 79 of the American Legion, Zionsville.
Mark Nicolet, son of Larry and Joan Nicolet, received this scholarship. He made a significant contribution to the Zionsville Community High School’s athletic program on the football field. He was a member of the all state and all conference teams which were two of his football accomplishments. Mark plans on continuing his education at Hillsdale College in Michigan to pursue a degree in business. This scholarship was established in memory of Tom Bauman who excelled in all aspects of his life prior to his untimely death in 1986. He was a 1981 graduate of Zionsville who made a major contribution to athletics.
Lauren Smith, daughter of Carol Smith and Steve Smith, was the first recipient of this award. She will be majoring in new media at IUPUI. She has designed and painted various backdrops and murals at school, church, not for profit organizations and for community events while working part time. This scholarship is given to a student from Zionsville Community High School who will be studying art in college or at a vocational school, and who has been employed in the Zionsville area. Brian Schmutzler, a 2000 Zionsville graduate helped to establish this fund in memory of his friend, Ben Brimmer.
Heather Crabtree, daughter of Dale and Roberta Crabtree, and Tasha Searles, daughter of Doug and Mary Beth Searles, were the recipients of this scholarship. Both have also been actively involved in the 4-H program and plan now to attend Purdue University. Heather will major in ag communications while Tasha is pursuing a pre-veterinary medicine degree. The citizens of Boone County established this scholarship for students who are interested in agriculture or related fields.
Lindsey Goodwin, daughter of Tim & Amy Goodwin was this year’s recipient of the Capps scholarship. She will attend Texas A & M to study elementary education. The Capps scholarship is given to a qualified student of Brownwood High School in Brownwood, Texas, who is deserving of financial assistance and who is likely to succeed as a college or university or vocational/technical student. John and Charlene Roth established the scholarship fund in memory of Charlene’s parents.
Ashley Galvin, a recent graduate of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School, won this award. She is the daughter of Marion and Kathy Galvin. Ashley was nominated by her principal as a student who exhibits the characteristics of a positive attitude, dedication, preserving, pride and leadership. She will attend Anderson University this fall. The award was established in memory and honor of Edward K. Castetter who attended Thorntown High School. He played a very active leadership role in the community, serving as a board member of Witham Hospital Foundation, a member of the Thorntown Lions Club, a member of Boone County Leadership, and a Trustee for Boone County.
Grant Helms, son of Robert & Mary Ann Campbell, was the recipient of this award. He was a member of the ZCHS vocal music program for the last three years by participating in Royalaires and high school musicals and plays. He plans to study political science at American University in Washington, D.C. This scholarship was established by the Zionsville Community High School show choir parents’ organizations: Royalaires and Choralaires.
Caleb Edwards, son of Mike and Jackie Edwards received this award. He will be attending IUPUI and majoring in building and construction management. This scholarship, named in memory of Crossmann Communities past president Richard Crosser, was established with funds from the home building business of Crossmann Communities for students from Lebanon High School who will be studying structural engineering, architecture, building trades, drafting, business, finance, accounting, real estate, or other field related to building trades.
Joshua Carroll, son of Phil and Joyce Carroll, plans to pursue a degree in biology at Indiana University. He has already exhibited entrepreneurship skills as owner of Carrolls’ Lawn & Landscape business. Jeff and Benita Thomasson established this scholarship. Jeff was a former Zionsville resident and graduate of Zionsville Community High School. As a high school student, Jeff worked for Mr. Taylor at Taylor Oil in Zionsville and credits Lloyd Taylor with encouraging him to pursue his education and business goals. He wanted to honor this couple who had positively influenced his young life, and he started this scholarship fund in their honor.
Morgen Buckley, daughter of Tim and Susan Buckley; James Sallee, son of Frank & Anita Sallee were the recipients of this award. Both will attend Purdue University this fall. Morgen is pursuing a career in hospitality: tourism management. James will study astronautical engineering. They have both participated in the athletic programs of Zionsville Middle School, and continued participation through graduation from Zionsville Community High School. Morgen played volleyball since 7th grade; while, James was involved in basketball, tennis and volleyball. Each spring a euchre tournament is held to raise funds for the scholarship, which was established by Sam Fix in memory of his parents Homer and Gwendolen. Sam retired in 1994 from Zionsville Community High School where he served as a teacher, coach and athletic director.
Sam Fix established this scholarship to award deserving students scholarships for continuing their education past high school.
Mark Nicolet, son of Larry and Joan Nicolet, was chosen to receive this award by the varsity head coaches, principal and athletic director of Zionsville Community High School. He will attend Hillsdale College to major in business. He was an athlete who possessed a cheerful, positive attitude, strong work ethic, and good sportsmanship and was a friend to all, which were characteristics of Todd. Todd W. Getty was a junior at Zionsville High School when his friends and family established this fund in his memory.
Kelly Myers, daughter of Terry and LuAnn Myers; Amanda Read Hills, daughter of Ron and Marty Read and Chad Cravens , son of Chip and Lori Cravens, were the recipients of this scholarship. Kelly plans to attend Indiana University to major in education. Chad will be continuing his studies at Purdue University towards a career in electrical engineering, while Amanda will continue at Milligan College to complete her major in business. The Board of Directors of Mid State Bank, now National City, established this educational scholarship fund in honor of the retirement of Tom Gruhl as bank president in March 1993. This award is made annually to a Boone County resident, enrolled or graduated from Zionsville Community High School or a contract teacher or administrator employed by Zionsville School Corporation. A student recipient must be enrolled and accepted for post high school education or training at an accredited institution with preference given to students attending Franklin College. For a school staff recipient, awards include seminar/workshop/conference enrollment and attendance.
Kelly Myers, daughter of Terry and LuAnn Myers, was awarded this scholarship designed for students who are pursuing careers in teaching. Kelly plans to study at Indiana University and major in education. Robert V. Copeland established this annual, renewable scholarship in memory of his friend, Florence Gruver, who died in 1994, and who had been a teacher and a fine and true lady.
Jacob McCord senior, Corina Iacopett, daughter of Dean and Frances Iacopetti, Joel Love, son of Robert and Rose Love and Seth Einterz, son of Bob and Lea Anne Einterz were the students chosen to receive this scholarship. Jacob will attend Rose Hulman Institute of Technology. Dr. Arthur Hansen established this award, which is given is given yearly to one student in each grade attending Zionsville Community High School for their excellence in science and mathematics.
Benjamin Walker, son of Scott and Amy Walker, graduate of Lebanon High School and Benjamin Worrell, son of Michael and Tess Worrell, graduate of Zionsville Community High School and Kyle Theobald, son of Dan and Marsha Theobald, graduate of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School were recipients of this award. Indiana University is the school of choice for Walker to pursue a degree in business. Worrell plans to obtain a criminal justice degree from IUPUI. Kyle will major in engineering at Bradley University. William Higgins established this scholarship through a trust. It is named in memory of his son, Buren, to aid worthy young men in pursuing a college education.
Tasha Searles, daughter of Douglas and Mary Beth Searles, is the 2004 recipient. She plans on pursuing a pre-veterinary degree at Purdue. This is one of two scholarships established by the late Mabel and Eugene Higgins. The Higgins Scholarship is for a Boone County resident who must attend an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. Mabel had a love of education and had been a math teacher in Knightstown and Greenfield. She and her husband also farmed in the Lebanon community for forty years. Mabel served her community as a member of the Board of Directors for the Citizens Bank & Trust Company. Memberships included the United Methodist Church in Franklin; and in Lebanon the Cooking Club, Psi Iota Xi Auxiliary, and Ulen Country Club.
Heather Crabtree, daughter of Dale and Roberta Crabtree, received this award. Purdue University is Heather’s choice for college where she will study agriculture communications. She has participated in 4-H programs while living in 3 different states over her years of participation. Recipients of this award must have been active in 4-H for the last three years of eligibility and possess good leadership skills. Barbara Portell established this scholarship in memory of her late husband Darrell A. Portell.
Rachel Heneghan, daughter of Michael and Lorie Heneghan, is this year’s scholarship recipient. She will be attending the University of Notre Dame to study pre-medicine. She was an active participant in basketball, track, soccer and cross country in high school. In addition, she has achieved many academic accomplishments. The scholarship is awarded to a senior girl at Zionsville Community High School who has shown the highest degree of leadership and initiative in scholarship and athletics. Bing and Suzi Pratt to honor their daughters, Kara and Lisa established this scholarship.
Baili French, daughter of Doug and Stacy French, received this award. She will pursue a speech pathology degree at Ball State University. This scholarship was established by Mr. Malpas to be awarded by Psi Iota Xi, Omega Chapter to a graduating female from Lebanon High School. It is preferred, but not mandatory, that applicants major in art, literature, music, or speech and hearing.
Tyler Richardson, Allison Clark, Amanda Caldwell are this year's recipients. Tyler, son of Tim and Sandy Richardson, will be attending Tri-State University to study civil engineering. Allison, daughter of Terry and Debra Clark, is pursuing a nursing degree at Purdue. Amanda, daughter of Ted and Patty Caldwell, will be studying at Ball State University towards a degree in nursing also. Students must be attending Western Boone High School and be in good standing with documented academic successes. Mildred and Pliny Randall, who farmed in northern Boone County and lived near Thorntown, established this scholarship. Upon their death, they directed that a general scholarship fund be established for students at four area high schools. The Community Foundation of Boone County administers the scholarship for students attending Western Boone High School.
This scholarship is for a young man who is an active member of the Dover Christian Church and is enrolled in a Christian Bible College for the purpose of preparing for ministry. Morris D. and Patricia Ramsey established this fund in honor of her parents Harold and Evelyn Rice. The Rices were very involved in the Dover Christian Church as long-time Sunday school teachers. Harold was also an elder of the church and Evelyn was active in the Ladies Aid program.
Kelly Myers, daughter of Terry and LuAnn Myers, was this years’ recipient. She will major in education at Indiana University. Friends and former students of Ms. Roby established this scholarship in her memory. She was a teacher for more than 60 years, teaching English and Latin at the high school and the PAGE (gifted) program at Pleasant View Elementary School. Carole Savitsky said of Miss Roby, “Her greatest contribution was herself. She gave her knowledge to the children, gave them an opportunity to be with someone who was truly a senior citizen-to understand that life goes on for a very long time. She really appreciated and had a keen understanding of what drove those children, and they gave her their respect.”
Victor Gootee, son of Paul and Janice Gootee, is the recipient of this scholarship for students who are pursuing medical studies. His plans are to attend Purdue University to major in health sciences. Dr. Slama established this fund to help students who plan to study medical science and who need financial assistance. He wanted to do something for the community and its schools in acknowledgment of the many benefits he and his children had received.
Megan Monn and Zachary Keller were the Boone County residents who were the recipients of this renewable scholarship. Megan, daughter of Robert and Lorrie Monn, is a graduate of Lebanon High School. She plans to study bio-chemistry at Brigham Young University. Zachary, son of Cynthia Stevens, graduated from Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School. DePauw University is his college of choice to pursue a degree in biology. Students are selected due to past academic performance and future potential, leadership, work experience, statement of career and educational aspirations and goals, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. The State Bank of Lizton’s Board of Directors and officers established this scholarship.
Kelli Kendall and Lauren Smith are the recipients of the Marjorie Stonehill-English, Journalism, and Creative Arts Scholarship. Kelli, daughter of Richard and Teresa Kendall, plans on attending Indiana University to major in journalism. Lauren, daughter of Carol Smith and Steve Smith, will study new media at IUPUI. Marjorie established this scholarship for students who want to pursue careers in the fields of English, Journalism or the Creative Arts. A life-long resident of Zionsville, Mrs. Stonehill was able to achieve her own college experience through the help of scholarships and wants to assist other Boone County students in a similar manner.
Established by the late Dr. Robert Stonehill, this scholarship was created for students who are pursuing careers in medicine. He also was able to pursue his educational goals and become professionally successful through the scholarships he received, and wants to help young people achieve similar success.
James Sallee, son of Frank and Anita Sallee, is the recipient of the Superintendent’s Stay-In-School Scholarship. Purdue University is the college of choice for James where he will study astronautical engineering. This scholarship is awarded to a Zionsville Community High School senior who has attended ZCHS for a minimum of two school years, who plans to pursue an altruistic career by seeking an initial bachelor’s degree. Because so many scholarships are for only one year, and because all begin with the freshman year, this scholarship is unique; while it is awarded to a senior, it will not be received until the student is enrolled in his or her second year of college. Dr. Howard Hull, Jr., Zionsville Community School Corporation Superintendent established this scholarship.
Audrey White, daughter of Ken and Sheri White was the recipient of this one time award. She just finished her junior year at Zionsville Community High School. This scholarship was established by Robert Shafer of Village Photo for a junior or senior student at ZCHS who excelled in photography. As the recipient of this award, Megan held a photo show at Village Photo in June 2003.
Patrick Hilton, son of Mark and Cathy Hilton, is the recipient of this scholarship. He plans on attending Indiana University and pursue a marketing/business degree. This scholarship is given to a student who was a four year participant in a wrestling program with a minimum of three years in the ZCHS program. In addition, the recipient earned a letter in wrestling 2 of his 4 years in high school. The recipient must have participated in the Zionsville wrestling program and is likely to succeed at college or at a vocational school.
This scholarship is for a Tippecanoe County resident. To be eligible for the Washburn Scholarship a student must be attending an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. The late Mabel and Eugene Higgins began this scholarship in memory of her parents, William S. and Emma Washburn.
Tyler Richardson, son of Tim and Sandy Richardson was the recipient of this scholarship. He will be attending Tri-State University to study civil engineering. Mr. & Mrs. Beam, long time residents of Jamestown established this renewable scholarship with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Boone County to provide financial assistance toward college expenses of a Western Boone graduate.
Allison Clark, daughter of Terry and Debra Clark, was the recipient of this scholarship available only to Western Boone graduates. Purdue is her school of choice and she plans to pursue a degree in nursing. To be chosen as a recipient, you must have been a 4-H member in Boone County. Allison is a ten year member of 4-H. The Bushes established this scholarship in memory of their son, James Ronald Bush, a local area farmer and a 1970 graduate of Granville Wells. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.
Laura Hill, daughter of Stephen and Rita Hill, is the first recipient of this award. She plans to major in pharmaceutical chemistry at Purdue University. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.
Todd Fields, son of Michelle Fields and Steve Fields, is the first recipient of this scholarship. Todd will attend Manchester College to study education. This scholarship was established in memory of Kent Poole, a 1982 graduate of Western Boone Jr/Sr High School by his family. While Kent attended Western Boone, he was involved in tennis, basketball and baseball and was named Western Boone’s Senior Athlete. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.
Angela Grogan was the recipient of this scholarship. She is currently enrolled at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. Judge Wharry was a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, Wabash College, IU, and the Indiana University of Law in Indianapolis. He was an attorney in Boone County for 30 years including serving in positions such as Boone County Circuit Court judge, interim judge in Howard Circuit Court, Zionsville Town Court judge, and Boone County Deputy Prosecutor. Friends and family of Judge Wharry established this scholarship.
Megan Monn, Laura Hill, and Rachel Heneghan were the three winners from the Boone County schools. Megan, daughter of Robert and Lorrie Monn, a graduate of Lebanon High School and will pursue a biochemistry degree at Purdue University. Laura, daughter of Stephen and Rita Hill, a Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School graduate, is majoring in pharmaceutical chemistry at Purdue University. Rachel, daughter of Michael and Lorie Heneghan, a Zionsville Community High School graduate, will pursue a degree in medicine and attend the University of Notre Dame. Carl Witt, a life long resident of Boone County, worked on a family farm for twenty years and was a school board member who established this scholarship.
Mark Nicolet and Rachel Heneghan were the recipients of this scholarship. Mark, son of Larry and Joan Nicolet, will attend Hillsdale College in Michigan to pursue a degree in business. Rachel, daughter of Michael and Lorie Heneghan, will study pre-medicine at the University of Notre Dame. Mark actively participated in football; while Rachel was in four different sports. The Zionsville Booster Club established this scholarship for a Zionsville Community High School student who is actively involved in school athletics.
Lauren Slibeck, daughter of Walt and Pam Slibeck, will attend Ohio University in Athens, Ohio to pursue a degree in broadcast journalism. The trustees choose a student who has shown that he or she has significantly benefited from the academic opportunities and instructional excellence provided by the high school.
Lauren Smith and Nicholas Brenneke were the two scholarship recipients. Lauren, daughter of Carol Smith and Steve Smith, will attend IUPUI to study new media. Ivy Tech College is the school of choice for Nicholas, son of Todd and Rebecca Brenneke where he will pursue a degree in computer information systems and networking. The Zionsville Optimist Club established these scholarships to be awarded to students who best exhibit character, leadership, and motivation, as well as having a financial need. In the past, the Zionsville Optimist Club only offered one scholarship. In the spring of 2003, a second scholarship became available for a senior who plans to obtain an associate degree or a vocational technical certificate.
