The Community Foundation of Boone County granted scholarships and awards valued at over $375,000 to Boone County students this spring. Sixty nine outstanding residents were recognized for their achievements. In this issue, the 2005 scholars and their awards are introduced.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships

Travis Allen and Zachary Hocutt were awarded the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship this spring out of 57 applicants from Boone County. Travis, son of Robert and Deborah Allen, will be attending the University of Notre Dame to major in engineering. Rose Hulman Institute of Technology is the college of choice for Zach, son of Michael and Gail Hocutt, where he plans on pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering. Both students will receive full tuition, required fees and a special allocation for required books and equipment for four years. These two scholarships combined are valued at over $223,000.

The other finalists for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship were: from Lebanon High School, Kristin Hollingsworth, daughter of Vince and Sharon Hollingsworth, Ryan King, son of Mike and Karol King, and Kristin McCurdy, daughter of Kevin and Cheryl McCurdy ; from Western Boone, Pete Akers, son of Doug and Marilyn Akers, Lana Knox, daughter of Lanny and Annette Knox, and Kate Moran, daughter of Robert and Mary Lu Moran; from Zionsville, Mary Elizabeth Campbell, daughter of Joseph Campbell and Joan Miller-Campbell and Alexander Hall, son of Gordon and Theresa Hall ; and from University High School, Jenna Walls, daughter of John and Rhonda Walls. All eleven students interviewed were exceptional. Gift certificates for college supplies were given to the nine finalists.

American Legion Post 79-Jack Clark Scholarship

Alexander Clark, son of Jeff Clark and Beth Clark, Ben Miller, son of Dottie Miller and Natasha Crosby, daughter of Bobby Hawk were this year’s recipients. Alex and Ben graduated from Zionsville Community High School, while Natasha graduated from Greenwood High School. Alex will major in the engineering field, while Ben is pursuing his various options. Natasha plans to study elementary education at IUPUI. The Legion chose the students for their commitment to their communities. This scholarship was established with proceeds from the sale of property that was left by Jack Clark to Post 79 of the American Legion in Zionsville.

Tom Bauman Memorial Scholarship

Brian Mason, son of Jeff and Mary Mason, received this scholarship. He made a significant contribution to the Zionsville Community High School’s athletic program on the football field. He was a 3 year varsity letterman, varsity team captain, all conference and received the team mental attitude award. In addition, he participated in baseball and basketball. Brian plans on continuing his education at Denison University to pursue a degree in physical education. This scholarship was established in memory of Tom Bauman who excelled in all aspects of his life prior to his untimely death in 1986. He was a 1981 graduate of Zionsville who made a major contribution to athletics.

Ben Brimmer Arts Scholarship

Ashley Risser, daughter of Dina Risser, was the second recipient of this award. She will be majoring in biology at Indiana University. Ashley plans on pursuing a career in dentistry. She has taken art classes in high school and will continue as she has realized their importance in helping her hand and eye coordination as a dentist. In addition, she has been employed part time at Kern Brothers. This scholarship is given to a student from Zionsville Community High School who will be studying art in college or at a vocational school, and who has been employed in the Zionsville area. Brian Schmutzler, a 2000 Zionsville graduate helped to establish this fund in memory of his friend, Ben Brimmer.

Boone County Agriculture Scholarship: High School

Craig Schluttenhofer, son of Mike and Roberta Schluttenhofer, was the recipient of this scholarship. He has been actively involved in Boy Scouts, 4-H and FFA and has received many awards for his involvement on teams and projects about the environment, forestry, and landscaping. He will major in horticulture science at Purdue University. The citizens of Boone County established this scholarship for students who are interested in agriculture or related fields.

Boone County Agriculture Scholarship: College Student

Rachel Cumberbatch, daughter of Karynn and Paul Seppel and Frank Cumberbatch was the first recipient of this agriculture scholarship. She is currently attending Purdue University and studying animal sciences and pre-veterinary. She is involved in a number of activities in college such as being the sophomore advisor to the president’s leadership class, animal sciences ambassador and a mentor with the pre-veterinary club to name a few. This scholarship was established by the citizens of Boone County for students who were already attending college who are in the agricultural or related fields.

Jim & Frances Capps Scholarship

James Franklin, son of Fred and Diane Franklin was this year’s recipient of the Capps scholarship. He will attend Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas and study psychology. The Capps scholarship is given to a qualified student of Brownwood High School in Brownwood, Texas, who is deserving of financial assistance and who is likely to succeed as a college or university or vocational/technical student. John and Charlene Roth established the scholarship fund in memory of Charlene’s parents.

Edward K. Castetter Memorial Award

Ryan Pyles, a recent graduate of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School, won this award. He is the son of Dean and Malinda Pyles. Ryan was nominated by his principal as a student who exhibits the characteristics of a positive attitude, dedication, preserving, pride and leadership. He will attend Anderson University this fall and study business. The award was established in memory and honor of Edward K. Castetter who attended Thorntown High School. He played a very active leadership role in the community, serving as a board member of Witham Hospital Foundation, a member of the Thorntown Lions Club, a member of Boone County Leadership, and a Trustee for Boone County.

Aaron & Cathy Coates Vocal Music Scholarship

Katherine Gribble, daughter of Jill Panetta and Alan Gribble, was the recipient of this award. She was a member of the ZCHS vocal music program for the last three years by participating in Choralaires and a number of musical groups. She plans to study government and legal studies and French at Bowdoin College in Maine. This scholarship was established by the Zionsville Community High School show choir parents’ organizations: Royalaires and Choralaires.

Richard H. Crosser Memorial Scholarship for Lebanon Schools

Jonathon Dieterlen, son of Jane Hamke-Dieterlen, received this award. He will be attending Purdue University and majoring in building construction technology. This scholarship, named in memory of Crossmann Communities past President Richard Crosser, known now as Beazer Homes, was established with funds from the home building business of Crossmann Communities for students from Lebanon High School who will be studying structural engineering, architecture, building trades, drafting, business, finance, accounting, real estate, or other field related to building trades.

The Entrepreneur Scholarship Fund – in Honor of Lloyd & Jane Taylor

Robert French, son of Rob and Sandi French, plans to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. He has already exhibited entrepreneurship skills by running and operating “Scoops”, an ice cream shop in Zionsville open the summer of 2004. Jeff and Benita Thomasson established this scholarship. Jeff was a former Zionsville resident and graduate of Zionsville Community High School. As a high school student, Jeff worked for Mr. Taylor at Taylor Oil in Zionsville and credits Lloyd Taylor with encouraging him to pursue his education and business goals. He wanted to honor this couple who had positively influenced his young life, and he started this scholarship fund in their honor.

Homer and Gwendolen Fix Memorial Scholarship

Sarah Hypes, daughter of Rick and Rita Hypes; and Ben Miller, son of Dottie Miller were the recipients of this award. Sarah is pursuing her nursing degree at Ball State University; while Ben will pursue his studies at Indiana University. They have both participated in the athletic programs of Zionsville Middle School, and Zionsville Community High School. Sarah played softball; while Ben participated in football. Each spring a euchre tournament is held to raise funds for the scholarship, which was established by Sam Fix in memory of his parents Homer and Gwendolen. Sam retired in 1994 from Zionsville Community High School where he served as a teacher, coach and athletic director.

Sam Fix Scholarship

Lauren Painter, daughter of David and Luann Painter; Sarah Hypes, daughter of Rick & Rita Hypes; Daniel Seligman, son of David and Sarah Seligman; and Brian Burkhammer, son of Eric and Kay Burkhammer were recipients of the Sam Fix Scholarship. Lauren will attend Ivy Tech State College and will major in veterinary science. Nursing will be Sarah’s field of study at Ball State University. Xavier University is the college of choice for Daniel where he will study accounting. Brian’s plans are to major in business at Indiana University. Sam Fix established this scholarship to award deserving students scholarships for continuing their education past high school.

Todd Getty Mental Attitude Memorial Scholarship

Whitney Biber, daughter of David and Muff Biber, was chosen to receive this award by the varsity head coaches, principal and athletic director of Zionsville Community High School. She will attend the University of Chicago to major in business. She was an athlete who possessed a cheerful, positive attitude, strong work ethic, and good sportsmanship and was a friend to all, which were characteristics of Todd. Todd W. Getty was a junior at Zionsville High School when his friends and family established this fund in his memory.

Thomas E. Gruhl Scholarship Fund

Sarah Hypes, daughter of Rick and Rita Hypes; Kelly Myers, daughter of Terry and LuAnn Myers; and Chad Cravens , son of Chip and Lori Cravens, were the recipients of this scholarship. Sarah will attend Ball State University to major in nursing. Chad will be continuing his studies at Purdue University towards a career in electrical engineering, while Kelly will continue at Indiana University to complete her major in education. The Board of Directors of Mid State Bank, now National City, established this educational scholarship fund in honor of the retirement of Tom Gruhl as bank president in March 1993. This award is made annually to a Boone County resident, enrolled or graduated from Zionsville Community High School or a contract teacher or administrator employed by Zionsville School Corporation. A student recipient must be enrolled and accepted for post high school education or training at an accredited institution with preference given to students attending Franklin College. For a school staff recipient, awards include seminar/workshop/conference enrollment and attendance.

Florence Gruver Memorial Scholarship

Emily Toth, daughter of Phillip and Catherine Toth, was awarded this scholarship designed for students who are pursuing careers in teaching. Emily plans to study at Butler University and major in music education. She was very involved in various bands, solos, ensembles and was a cadet teacher during high school. Robert V. Copeland established this annual, renewable scholarship in memory of his friend, Florence Gruver, who died in 1994, and who had been a teacher and a fine and true lady.

Arthur & Nancy Hansen Scholarship Award for Science & Mathematics

Corina Iacopetti senior, daughter of Dean and Frances Iacopetti, Will Olds, junior, son of Bill and Nancy Olds, Seth Einterz, sophomore, son of Bob and Lea Anne Einterz and Sam Dittmer, freshman, son of Phil and Janet Dittmer were the students chosen to receive this scholarship. Corina will attend Stanford University and study human biology and philosophy. Dr. Arthur Hansen established this award, which is given is given yearly to one student in each grade attending Zionsville Community High School for their excellence in science and mathematics.

Buren Fund Scholarship of the William Higgins Trust

Ryan King, son of Mike and Karol King, graduate of Lebanon High School and Craig Schluttenhofer, son of Mike and Roberta Schluttenhofer, graduate of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School and Ben Miller, son of Dottie Miller, graduate of Zionsville Community High School were recipients of this award. Indiana University is the school of choice for Ryan to pursue a degree in business. Craig plans to obtain a horticulture science degree from Purdue. Ben will attend Indiana University to pursue his studies. William Higgins established this scholarship through a trust. It is named in memory of his son, Buren, to aid worthy young men in pursuing a college education.

Higgins Scholarship

This is one of two scholarships established by the late Mabel and Eugene Higgins. To be eligible for the Higgins Scholarship a student must be a Boone County resident who attends an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. In 2005, this scholarship was not available. Mabel had a love of education and had been a math teacher in Knightstown and Greenfield. She and her husband also farmed in the Lebanon community for forty years. Mabel served her community as a member of the Board of Directors for the Citizens Bank & Trust Company. Memberships included the United Methodist Church in Franklin; and in Lebanon the Cooking Club, Psi Iota Xi Auxiliary, and Ulen Country Club.

Darrell A. Portell 4-H Memorial Scholarship

Markie Lyons, daughter of Mark and Sherri Leffler, received this award. Valparaiso University is Markie’s choice for college. She is a nine year member of 4-H and is a Jr. leader and secretary for her club. Recipients of this award must have been active in 4-H for the last three years of eligibility and possess good leadership skills. Barbara Portell established this scholarship in memory of her late husband Darrell A. Portell.

Pratt Family Fund Scholarship

Whitney Biber, daughter of David and Muff Biber, is this year’s scholarship recipient. She will be studying at the University of Chicago. Whitney was an active participant in cross country, swimming and track in high school. In addition, she has achieved many academic accomplishments. The scholarship is awarded to a senior girl at Zionsville Community High School who has shown the highest degree of leadership and initiative in scholarship and athletics. The recipient too must have received a varsity letter in at least two sports. Bing and Suzi Pratt to honor their daughters, Kara and Lisa established this scholarship.

Psi Iota Xi-Omega Chapter Malpas Scholarship

Emily Hodges, daughter of Vance and Tina Hodges, received this award. She will pursue a music education degree at Millikin in Decatur, Illinois. This scholarship was established by Mr. Malpas to be awarded by Psi Iota Xi, Omega Chapter to a graduating female from Lebanon High School. It is preferred, but not mandatory, that applicants major in art, literature, music, or speech and hearing.

Western Boone-Pliny & Mildred Randall Scholarship

Amy Pierce, Ryan Pyles, and Missy Tidd are the 2005 recipients. Amy, daughter of Danny and Lisa Pierce, will be attending IU to study nursing. Ryan, son of Dean and Malinda Pyles, will be studying at Anderson University towards a degree in business. Ball State University is the college of choice for Missy, daughter of Robert and Tammy Tidd. Missy plans on majoring in social work. Students must be attending Western Boone High School and be in good standing with documented academic successes. Mildred and Pliny Randall, who farmed in northern Boone County and lived near Thorntown, established this scholarship. Upon their death, they directed that a general scholarship fund be established for students at four area high schools. The Community Foundation of Boone County administers the scholarship for students attending Western Boone High School.

Harold and Evelyn Rice Scholarship

This scholarship is for a young man who is an active member of the Dover Christian Church and is enrolled in a Christian Bible College for the purpose of preparing for ministry. Morris D. and Patricia Ramsey established this fund in honor of her parents Harold and Evelyn Rice. The Rices were very involved in the Dover Christian Church as long-time Sunday school teachers. Harold was also an elder of the church and Evelyn was active in the Ladies Aid program.

Dorothy Roby Memorial Scholarship

Jessica Basch, daughter of Jeff and Pamela Basch, was this years’ recipient. She will major in education at Eastern University in Pennsylvania. Friends and former students of Ms. Roby established this scholarship in her memory. She was a teacher for more than 60 years, teaching English and Latin at the high school and the PAGE (gifted) program at Pleasant View Elementary School. Carole Savitsky said of Miss Roby, “Her greatest contribution was herself. She gave her knowledge to the children, gave them an opportunity to be with someone who was truly a senior citizen-to understand that life goes on for a very long time. She really appreciated and had a keen understanding of what drove those children, and they gave her their respect.”

Thomas G. Slama Scholarship Fund

Sarah Hypes, daughter of Rita and Rick Hypes, is the recipient of this scholarship for students who are pursuing medical studies. She will be attending Ball State University to major in nursing. Dr. Slama established this fund to help students who plan to study medical science and who need financial assistance. He wanted to do something for the community and its schools in acknowledgment of the many benefits he and his children had received.

State Bank of Lizton Community Bankers Scholarship

Katrina Wicks and Pete Akers were the Boone County residents who were the recipients of this renewable scholarship. Katrina, daughter of Thomas and Cynthia Wicks, is a graduate of Lebanon High School. She plans to study communication law at Valparaiso University. Pete, son of Doug and Marilyn Akers, graduated from Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School. Purdue University is his college of choice to pursue a degree in chemical engineering. Students are selected due to past academic performance and future potential, leadership, work experience, statement of career and educational aspirations and goals, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. The State Bank of Lizton’s Board of Directors and officers established this scholarship.

Marjorie Stonehill-English, Journalism, Creative Arts Scholarship

Megan Stuart is the recipient of the Marjorie Stonehill-English, Journalism, and Creative Arts Scholarship. She is the daughter of Clyde Stuart. Megan will be attending Indiana University to major in journalism. Marjorie established this scholarship for students who want to pursue careers in the fields of English, Journalism or the Creative Arts. A life-long resident of Zionsville, Mrs. Stonehill was able to achieve her own college experience through the help of scholarships and wants to assist other Boone County students in a similar manner.

Robert Stonehill Pre-Medical Scholarship

Amanda McKenzie, daughter of Mike and Aleta McKenzie, received this scholarship established by the late Dr. Robert Stonehill. She has chosen to attend Purdue University to study biology and pre-med with plans to become a pediatrician. Dr. Stonehill created this scholarship for students who are pursuing careers in medicine. He, like his wife Marjorie, was able to pursue his educational goals and become professionally successful through the scholarships he received, and he wants to help young people achieve similar success. This scholarship is unique as it is awarded your senior year of high school but not received until your second year of college.

Superintendent’s Stay-in-School Scholarship

Christopher Reigle, son of Charles and Frances Reigle, is the recipient of the Superintendent’s Stay-In-School Scholarship. Purdue University is the college of choice for Christopher. This scholarship is awarded to a Zionsville Community High School senior who has attended ZCHS for a minimum of two school years, who plans to pursue an altruistic career by seeking an initial bachelor’s degree. Because so many scholarships are for only one year, and because all begin with the freshman year, this scholarship is unique; while it is awarded to a senior, it will not be received until the student is enrolled in his or her second year of college. Dr. Howard Hull, Jr., Zionsville Community School Corporation Superintendent established this scholarship.

Harold Eugene Wagner Wrestling Scholarship

Josiah Wagoner, son of Kerry and Tamara Wagoner, is the recipient of this scholarship. He plans on attending Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa and pursue an education degree.

In addition to his schooling, Josiah will wrestle in college. This scholarship is given to a student who was a four year participant in a wrestling program with a minimum of three years in the ZCHS program. In addition, the recipient must earn a letter in wrestling 2 of his 4 years in high school. The student chosen must have participated in the Zionsville wrestling program and is likely to succeed at college or at a vocational school.

Washburn Scholarship

Kristen Leffert, daughter of Charles and Ann Schreyer, received the Washburn Scholarship. She graduated from West Lafayette Jr. Sr. High School and will attend Purdue University to study consumer family science education. This scholarship is for a Tippecanoe County resident and is not available every year. To be eligible for the Washburn Scholarship a student must be attending an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. The late Mabel and Eugene Higgins began this scholarship in memory of her parents, William S. and Emma Washburn

Western Boone Education Foundation: Ralph F. & Katherine L. Beam Family Scholarship

Tory Foster, son of Jeff and Vickie Foster, was the recipient of this scholarship. He will be attending Indiana State University to study aerospace administration. Mr. & Mrs. Beam, long time residents of Jamestown established this renewable scholarship with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Boone County to provide financial assistance toward college expenses of a Western Boone graduate.

Western Boone Education Foundation: Ron Bush Family Scholarship

Natalie Sharp, daughter of Deb Sharp, was the recipient of this scholarship available only to Western Boone graduates. Ivy Tech State College is her school of choice and she plans to pursue a degree in nursing towards a career as a neonatal nurse. To be chosen as a recipient, you must have been a 4-H member in Boone County. Natalie is an eight year 4-H member. The Bushes established this scholarship in memory of their son, James Ronald Bush, a local area farmer and a 1970 graduate of Granville Wells. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.

Western Boone Education Foundation: Earl Hoock Scholarship

Breana Buckingham, daughter of Roger and Peggy Buckingham is the 2nd recipient of this award. She plans to major in biomedical engineering at Purdue. Earl Hoock was a long time Physics and Mathematics teacher at Thorntown and Western Boone High Schools and also drove a school bus for many years. It is the family’s goal to provide financial assistance to a deserving Western Boone senior who plans to further their education in the areas of science, mathematics or engineering. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.

Western Boone Education Foundation: Kent Poole Athletic Scholarship

Kate Moran, daughter of Robert and Mary Lu Moran, received this scholarship. She will attend DePauw University to study chemistry and pre-med. This scholarship was established in memory of Kent Poole, a 1982 graduate of Western Boone Jr.Sr. High School by his family. While Kent attended Western Boone, he was involved in tennis, basketball and baseball and was named Western Boone’s Senior Athlete. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.

Western Boone Education Foundation: Roscoe D. & J. Charlene Stewart

Ryan Pyles, son of Dean and Malinda Pyles, is the first recipient of this scholarship. Anderson University is his college of choice where he will pursue a business degree. Roscoe and Charlene Stewarts were long time residents of Thorntown. To be a recipient of their scholarship, a student must have maintained at least a “C” average in school and have attended Thorntown Elementary School. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.

Allen F. Wharry Memorial Scholarship

Briana Kovac was the recipient of this scholarship. She is currently enrolled at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. To qualify for this award, the recipient must be either a current resident of Boone County or a graduate of a Boone County high school who has completed at least one year of law school at IU School of Law in Indianapolis. Judge Wharry was a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, Wabash College, IU, and the Indiana University of Law in Indianapolis. He was an attorney in Boone County for 30 years including serving in positions such as Boone County Circuit Court judge, interim judge in Howard Circuit Court, Zionsville Town Court judge, and Boone County Deputy Prosecutor. Friends and family of Judge Wharry established this scholarship.

Carl Witt Trust Scholarship

Kristen McCurdy and Amy Pierce were the two recipients of this county wide scholarship. Kristen, daughter of Kevin and Cheryl McCurdy, a graduate of Lebanon High School, will pursue a business degree at Butler University. Amy, daughter of Danny and Lisa Pierce, a Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School graduate, is majoring in nursing at Indiana University. Carl Witt, a life long resident of Boone County, worked on a family farm for twenty years, and was a school board member, established this scholarship.

Zionsville Athletic Booster Club Scholarship

Danny Goff and Elizabeth Enders were the recipients of the Zionsville Athletic Booster Club scholarships. Danny, son of Doug and Shery Goff, will attend the University of Indianapolis to pursue a degree in business. Elizabeth, daughter of David and Judy Enders, will study communications at Purdue University. Danny actively participated in 3 sports all four years of high school: football, wrestling and track; while Elizabeth was in tennis, cross country and volleyball. The Zionsville Booster Club established this scholarship for one girl and one boy from Zionsville Community High School who are actively involved in school athletics.

Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees Scholarship

Patricia Litkowski, daughter of Tom and Barbara Litkowski, was the 2005 recipient. She will attend Washington University in St. Louis to pursue a degree in international studies. The trustees choose a student who has shown that he or she has significantly benefited from the academic opportunities and instructional excellence provided by the high school.

Zionsville Optimist Club Scholarships

Sarah Hypes and Ashley Risser were the two scholarship recipients. Sarah, daughter of Rick and Rita Hypes, will attend Ball State to study nursing. Indiana University is the school of choice for Ashley, daughter of Dina Risser, where she will pursue a biology degree towards a career in dentistry. The Zionsville Optimist Club established these scholarships to be awarded to students who best exhibit character, leadership, and motivation, as well as having a financial need.

Miss Indiana Scholarship program brings national visibility to Boone County

In January of 2005, the Community Foundation of Boone County entered into a partnership with the Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant organization to provide scholarships and awards to the contestants of the Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant and Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen Pageant. For the first time ever, these pageants were held in Boone County. Zionsville was chosen to host the event at the new Zionsville Community High School Performing Arts Center in June. Over 425,000 will be awarded in scholarships to 24 women for Miss Indiana. $2,200 will be given in scholarships to 25 contestants for Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen. Miss Indiana will compete to become the Miss America 2006.

New Scholarships Are Added

Family Music Studio Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Barbara Walters, owner of Family Music Studio in Lebanon, to celebrate her 30th year of teaching violin, viola, cello and piano in a private studio setting. The scholarship will be for a high school senior graduating in good standing from a public, private or home school. With Barbara’s love of music, she wanted to award a scholarship to a student who also enjoys an active musical life and wants to be committed to serving the community musically.

Theodore Husting Morden D.P.M. Wrestling Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Dr. Ted Morden for a wrestler, who has been a participant in the Zionsville Community High School wrestling program for three years and who has maintained a 3.0 GPA or higher. Dr. Morden feels that wrestling was very important in his life. It taught him self confidence, self reliance, punctuality and the benefits of being physically fit.

Bobby Hysong Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by friends and family of Bobby Hysong in his memory. He was a 1983 graduate of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School and was active in FFA, 4-H and played basketball. Upon graduation, he farmed with his family and raised corn, soybeans, wheat and cattle. In 2000, he was named “Farmer of the Year.&rdquo

On February 8, 2005 Bobby was tragically killed while driving his tractor on Indiana 39 in Boone County. The green ribbon safety committee was formed to raise funds towards a scholarship in Bobby Hysong’s memory. It has turned into a state-wide effort to increase motorist safety awareness when traveling the same roads as farm equipment.

Ribbons and stickers are available for a donation at Frontier Coop in Lebanon or by calling Joan Hysong at 765-482-1462 or Chris Hiland at 765-483-3564. The green magnetic ribbon has a tractor emblem on it and can be put on any vehicle. This states “Be patient, be kind—stay behind.” Orange stickers are also available to be put on tractors, combines or wagons. The hope is through these stickers, people become more aware of farmers on heavily traveled roads and that a similar accident will be prevented from happening in the future. The Bobby Hysong Memorial Scholarship will be first available next spring and will be for a graduating Western Boone senior who has an interest in some kind of agriculture.
