The Community Foundation of Boone County granted a total of seventy-seven scholarships and awards valued at over $270,000 the spring of 2006. In this issue, the scholars and their awards are introduced.
Casey Heck and Abby Howenstein were awarded the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship this spring out of 43 applicants from Boone County. Both scholars will be attending Indiana University. Casey, daughter of Jeff and Debra Heck, will be majoring in apparel merchandising while Abby, daughter of Mike Howenstein and Terry McCain will major in biology/chemistry. Each student will receive full tuition, required fees and a special allocation of up to $800 per year for required books and equipment for four years of undergraduate studies. These two scholarships combined are valued at over $69,200. The other finalists for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship were: from Lebanon High School, Breanna Davis, daughter of Bob and Pam Davis, Abigail Edwards, daughter of Mike and Jackie, Katie Jones, daughter of David and Susan Jones, Catherine Lyons, daughter of Richard Lyons and Debra and Steve Barnes and Micah Weaver, son of Barry and Rena Weaver ; from Park Tudor, Kristen Reinecke, daughter of Daniel & Lu Ann Reinecke; from Western Boone, Kasey Miller, daughter of Kevyn and Rene' Miller; from Zionsville, Nora Deeg, daughter of Mark and Susan Deeg, Anna Konradi, daughter of Eugene and Donna Konradi and Sven Moller-Tank, son of Holger Tank and Beth Moller-Tank. All twelve students interviewed were exceptional. A cash award was given to the ten finalists.
Benjamin Thacker, son of Mark and Lisa Thacker, and Chris Phillips, son of Bob and Diane Phillips were this year's recipients. Both gentlemen graduated from Zionsville Community High School. Ben will major in management/finance at Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio; while Chris is pursuing a degree in finance at the University of Notre Dame. The Legion chose the students for their commitment to their communities. This scholarship was established with proceeds from the sale of property that was left by Jack Clark to Post 79 of the American Legion in Zionsville.
Kasey Miller, daughter of Kevyn and Rene' Miller, was the recipient of this scholarship. She has been actively involved in FFA and has received state and district individual and team awards and has held leadership positions within her chapter.. She will major in agricultural leadership and communications at Texas A&M. The citizens of Boone County established this scholarship for students who are interested in agriculture or related fields.
Rachel Cumberbatch, daughter of Karynn and Paul Seppel and Frank Cumberbatch was the recipient of this agriculture scholarship. She is currently attending Purdue University and studying animal sciences. She is involved in a number of activities in college including being appointed by Governor Mitch Daniels to sit on the academic affairs and physical facilities committee of the Purdue University Board of Trustees. This scholarship was established by the citizens of Boone County for students who were already attending college who are in the agricultural or related fields.
Nicole Eberwein, daughter of Sam Eberwein and Lori Eberwein, received this scholarship. She made a significant contribution to the Zionsville Community High School's athletic training program through all four years of high school. Nicole plans on continuing her education at Indiana University to pursue a degree in athletic training. This scholarship was established in memory of Tom Bauman who excelled in all aspects of his life prior to his untimely death in 1986. He was a 1981 graduate of Zionsville who made a major contribution to athletics.
Rebecca Gunderman, daughter of Richard and Laura Gunderman, was this year' recipient. She will be attending IUPUI where she will continue to pursue her love of art. Besides already using her talent in art to serve the community, she has been employed part time at the Brick Street Inn. This scholarship is given to a student from Zionsville Community High School who will be studying art in college or at a vocational school, and who has been employed in the Zionsville area. Brian Schmutzler, a 2000 Zionsville graduate, helped to establish this fund in memory of his friend, Ben Brimmer.
Micah Weaver, son of Barry and Rena Weaver, graduate of Lebanon High School and Christopher Pennington, son of Tina Burdine graduate of Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School and Christopher Shanley, son of Bill and RoxAnne Shanley, graduate of Zionsville Community High School were recipients of this award. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is the school of choice for Micah to pursue a degree in computer science and mathematics. Chris Pennington plans to obtain an accounting degree from Franklin College; while Chris Shanley will study at Indiana University and major in business or education. William Higgins established this scholarship through a trust. It is named in memory of his son, Buren, to aid worthy young men in pursuing a college education.
Kevin Seaton, son of Donnie and Tamara Seaton, was this year's recipient of the Capps scholarship. He will attend Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas and study physics towards a career as a physics professor. The Capps scholarship is given to a qualified student of Brownwood High School in Brownwood, Texas, who is deserving of financial assistance and who is likely to succeed as a college or university or vocational/technical student. John and Charlene Roth established the scholarship fund in memory of Charlene's parents.
Michelle Boyle, daughter of Craig and Julie Boyle, was the first recipient of this scholarship. She will attend Purdue and major in chemistry. The recipient of this county-wide award must attend Purdue University, have financial need, and have demonstrated leadership skills though involvement in extracurricular activities. The scholarship was established by Joseph K. and Charlotte Tyre, long time residents of Boone County, in memory of Charlotte's parents, James Holman Carr and Pauline Neel Carr. The Carrs exemplified the American farm life dedicated to agriculture and were innovators within their community.
Christopher Shanley, a recent graduate of Zionsville High School, won this award. He is the son of Bill and RoxAnne Shanley. Chris was nominated by his principal as a student who exhibits characteristics of Edward Castetter which is a positive attitude, dedicated, preserving, pride and leadership. He will attend Indiana University this fall and study business or education. The award was established in memory and honor of Edward K. Castetter who attended Thorntown High School. He played a very active leadership role in the community, serving as a board member of Witham Hospital Foundation, a member of the Thorntown Lions Club, a member of Boone County Leadership, and a Trustee for Boone County.
Taylor Rausch, daughter of Dave and Deidra Rausch, was the recipient of this award. She was a member of the ZCHS vocal music program for the last three years as a participant of the chamber choir, Choralaires, Royalaires, and was in the fall musicals in high school. She plans to study journalism and history with a minor in music at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. This scholarship was established by the Zionsville Community High School show choir parents' organizations: Royalaires and Choralaires.
Katie Jones, daughter of David & Susan Jones, received this award. She will be attending Purdue University and is majoring in environmental civil engineering. This scholarship, named in memory of Crossmann Communities past President Richard Crosser, was established with funds from the home building business of Crossmann Communities, now Beazer Homes, for students from Lebanon High School. Recipients of the award will be studying structural engineering, architecture, building trades, drafting, business, finance, accounting, real estate, or other field related to building trades.
Benjamin Thacker, son of Mark & Lisa Thacker, plans to pursue a degree in management/finance/youth ministry at Cedarville University. He has already exhibited entrepreneurship skills by running his own lawn care and landscaping business. Jeff and Benita Thomasson established this scholarship. Jeff was a former Zionsville resident and graduate of Zionsville Community High School. As a high school student, Jeff worked for Mr. Taylor at Taylor Oil in Zionsville and credits Lloyd Taylor with encouraging him to pursue his education and business goals. He wanted to honor this couple who had positively influenced his young life, and he started this scholarship fund in their honor.
Amy O'Connell, daughter of Paul and Teresa O'Connell, is the first recipient of this scholarship. She will be attending Roosevelt University: Chicago College of Performing Arts and will pursue a degree in musical theatre. Barbara Walters, owner of Family Music Studio, established this scholarship to celebrate her 30th year of teaching violin, viola, cello and piano in a private studio setting. The recipient chosen has been dedicated to an active musical life and has a commitment to serving the community musically.
Kelly Graham, daughter of Keith and Kimberly Graham; Christopher Shanley, son of Bill and RoxAnne Shanley and Benjamin Thacker, son of Mark and Lisa Thacker were the recipients of this award. Kelly is pursuing her degree at the University of Kentucky; while Chris will study business or education at Indiana University. Cedarville University is the college of choice for Ben where he plans to major in management/finance/youth ministry. All three have participated in the athletic programs of Zionsville Middle School, and Zionsville Community High School. Kelly swam on the swim team. Chris played football and baseball. Basketball was the sport of choice for Ben. Each spring a euchre tournament is held to raise funds for the scholarship, which was established by Sam Fix in memory of his parents Homer and Gwendolen. Sam retired in 1994 from Zionsville Community High School where he served as a teacher, coach and athletic director.
Sam Fix established this scholarship to award deserving students scholarships for continuing their education past high school.
Will Olds, son of Bill and Nancy Olds, was chosen to receive this award by the varsity head coaches, principal and athletic director of Zionsville Community High School. He was a leader on both the cross country and track teams. Molecular biology will be his major at the University of Michigan. He was an athlete who possessed a cheerful, positive attitude, strong work ethic, and good sportsmanship and was a friend to all, which were characteristics of Todd. Todd W. Getty was a junior at Zionsville High School when his friends and family established this fund in his memory.
Benjamin Thacker, son of Mark and Lisa Thacker, Sarah Hypes, daughter of Rick and Rita Hypes and Kelly Myers, daughter of Terry and LuAnn Myers, were each a recipient of this scholarship. Ben will begin his studies this fall at Cedarville University with business and youth ministry majors. Sarah will be continuing her studies at Ball State University with a major in nursing; while Kelly will continue at Indiana University to complete her degree in education. The Board of Directors of Mid State Bank, now National City, established this educational scholarship fund in honor of the retirement of Tom Gruhl as bank president in March 1993. This award is made annually to a Boone County resident, enrolled or graduated from Zionsville Community High School or a contract teacher or administrator employed by Zionsville School Corporation. A student recipient must be enrolled and accepted for post high school education or training at an accredited institution with preference given to students attending Franklin College. For a school staff recipient, awards include seminar/workshop/conference enrollment and attendance.
Abigail Edwards, daughter of Mike and Jackie Edwards, was awarded this scholarship designed for students who are pursuing careers in teaching. Abigail plans to study at St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana and major in mathematics education and Spanish. Robert V. Copeland established this annual, renewable scholarship in memory of his friend, Florence Gruver, who died in 1994, and who had been a teacher and a fine and true lady.
Will Olds senior, son of Bill and Nancy Olds; Francis Admana, junior, son of Hermie and Carmelita Admana; Sam Dittmer, sophomore, son of Phil and Janet Dittmer and Chris Mattson, freshman, son of Dave and Terri Mattson were the students chosen to receive this award. Dr. Arthur Hansen established this award, which is given yearly to one student in each grade attending Zionsville Community High School for their excellence in science and mathematics.
Amanda Wulle, daughter of Lisa Wulle, is the 2006 Higgins scholarship recipient. She plans on pursuing a pharmaceutical sciences degree at Purdue University. This is one of two scholarships established by the late Mabel and Eugene Higgins. To be eligible for the Higgins Scholarship a student must be a Boone County resident who attends an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. Mabel had a love of education and had been a math teacher in Knightstown and Greenfield. She and her husband also farmed in the Lebanon community for forty years. Mabel served her community as a member of the Board of Directors for the Citizens Bank & Trust Company. Memberships included the United Methodist Church in Franklin; and in Lebanon the Cooking Club, Psi Iota Xi Auxiliary, and Ulen Country Club.
Brandon Meyer, son of Jim and Sherry Meyer, is the first recipient of the scholarship. He will attend Purdue University and study aviation management. To receive this award, the recipient must have wrestled a minimum of three years in high school and maintained a 3.0 out of 4.0 GPA. This scholarship was established by Robert M. Palmer, M.D., Institute of Biomechanics, Inc. to honor Dr. Ted Morden, who also was a wrestler. Dr. Morden feels wrestling was very important in his life and taught him self confidence, punctuality, self reliance and to be physically fit.
Benjamin Donaldson, son of Bob and Kathy Donaldson, is the first recipient of this scholarship. Indiana University is the school of choice for Ben where he will be plans to major in business. This scholarship was established by friends and family in memory of Pete Paddock who was a teacher and administrator in the Zionsville Schools for 38 years. The athlete chosen exemplified the positive spirit of Mr. Paddock. The qualities include: strength of character, integrity, attitude, work ethic, community involvement, and sportsmanship.
Laura Sanders, daughter of Gary and Lee Ann Sanders, received this award. Purdue is Laura's choice for college to pursue a career in agribusiness. She is a nine year member of 4-H, junior member of the 4-H board and a member of the 4-H council. In addition, she did a minimum of twelve projects every year that she was in 4-H. Recipients of this award must have been active in 4-H for the last three years of eligibility and possess good leadership skills. Barbara Portell established this scholarship in memory of her late husband Darrell A. Portell who was a very active 4-H volunteer.
Abby Inman, daughter of Mark and Kathy Inman, is this year's scholarship recipient. She will be studying at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Abby was an active participant in soccer and track in high school. The scholarship is awarded to a senior girl at Zionsville Community High School who has shown the highest degree of leadership and initiative in scholarship and athletics. The recipient too must have received a varsity letter in at least two sports. Bing and Suzi Pratt to honor their daughters, Kara and Lisa established this scholarship.
Vanessa Beck, daughter of Denise Beck received this award. She will major in visual communications and photography at IUPUI/Herron. This scholarship was established by Mr. Malpas to be awarded by Psi Iota Xi, Omega Chapter to a graduating female from Lebanon High School. It is preferred, but not mandatory, that applicants major in art, literature, music, or speech and hearing.
This scholarship is for a young man who is an active member of the Dover Christian Church and is enrolled in a Christian Bible College for the purpose of preparing for ministry. Morris D. and Patricia Ramsey established this fund in honor of her parents Harold and Evelyn Rice. The Rices were very involved in the Dover Christian Church as long-time Sunday school teachers. Harold was also an elder of the church and Evelyn was active in the Ladies Aid program.
Christopher Shanley, son of Bill and RoxAnne Shanley, was this years' recipient. He will major in business or education at Indiana University. Friends and former students of Ms. Roby established this scholarship in her memory. She was a teacher for more than 60 years, teaching English and Latin at the high school and the PAGE (gifted) program at Pleasant View Elementary School. Upon the passing of Yolanda Cox, additional contributions were made to this scholarship in her memory. She too was an educator and served as a teacher and guidance counselor for thirty seven years at Zionsville Community High School. Both Ms. Roby and Mrs. Cox made a significant impact in the lives of many students.
Kathryn Healy, daughter of Darla Healy, is the recipient of this scholarship for students who are pursuing medical studies. She will be attending Purdue University to major in medical technology. Dr. Slama established this fund to help students who plan to study medical science and who need financial assistance. He wanted to do something for the community and its schools in acknowledgment of the many benefits he and his children had received.
Katie Jones and Melinda Landwerlen were the Boone County residents who were the recipients of this renewable scholarship. Katie, daughter of David and Susan Jones, is a graduate of Lebanon High School. Melinda, daughter of Cliff and Pam Landwerlen, graduated from Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School. Both girls will attend Purdue University. Katie will major in environmental civil engineering and Melinda will pursue a chemistry degree. Students are selected due to past academic performance and future potential, leadership, work experience, statement of career and educational aspirations and goals, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. The State Bank of Lizton's Board of Directors and officers established this scholarship.
Morgan Robertson, son of Kent and Cathy Robertson, is the recipient of the Stay-In-School Scholarship. DePauw University is the college of choice for Morgan where he will major in biology. This scholarship is awarded to a Zionsville Community High School senior who has attended ZCHS for a minimum of two school years, who plans to pursue an altruistic career by seeking an initial bachelor's degree. Because so many scholarships are for only one year, and because all begin with the freshman year, this scholarship is unique; while it is awarded to a senior, it will not be received until the student is enrolled in his or her second year of college. Dr. Howard Hull, Jr., and his wife Lisa established this scholarship.
Amy O'Connell is the recipient of the Marjorie Stonehill-English, Journalism, and Creative Arts Scholarship. She is the daughter of Paul and Teresa O'Connell. She will be attending Roosevelt University: Chicago College of Performing Arts to major in musical theatre. Marjorie established this scholarship for students who want to pursue careers in the fields of English, Journalism or the Creative Arts. A life-long resident of Zionsville, Mrs. Stonehill was able to achieve her own college experience through the help of scholarships and wants to assist other Boone County students in a similar manner.
Cormack Miller, son of Steve and Jane Miller, received this scholarship established by the late Dr. Robert Stonehill. He has chosen to attend Indiana University to study biochemistry with plans to become a pediatric surgeon. Dr. Stonehill created this scholarship for students who are pursuing careers in medicine. He, like his wife Marjorie, was able to pursue his educational goals and become professionally successful through the scholarships he received, and he wants to help young people achieve similar success. This scholarship is unique as it is awarded your senior year of high school but not received until your second year of college.
Laura Sanders, daughter of Gary and LeeAnn Sanders, is the first recipient of this scholarship. She will attend Purdue to pursue a career in agribusiness. The recipient of this award must be attending Purdue University and be enrolled in their college of agriculture. In addition, the winner must been an active 4-H member, has need, and has demonstrated leadership skills through involvement in extracurricular activities. The scholarship was established by Charlotte Tyre who was a life time resident of Boone County, a 10 year 4-H member and a very dedicated community volunteer for many organizations.
Bryan Watson, son of Jerry and Vicki Watson is the first recipient of this scholarship. Wabash College is his school of choice where he plans to major in history with a career in teaching. To receive this scholarship, the student must be planning to enroll in Wabash College in Crawfordsville, have need, and has valued community service. Joseph & Charlotte Tyre, long time residents of Boone County, established this scholarship. Joe graduated from Lebanon High School and Wabash College. In addition, he was a history and social studies teacher and owned a very successful insurance company. Both Charlotte and Joe were very active volunteers within their community.
Marcus Davis, son of Curt and Alana Davis, is the recipient of this scholarship. He plans on attending Ivy Tech Community College and pursue marketing and advertising degree. This scholarship is given to a student who was a four year participant in a wrestling program with a minimum of three years in the ZCHS program. In addition, the recipient must earn a letter in wrestling 2 of his 4 years in high school. The student chosen must have participated in the Zionsville wrestling program and is likely to succeed at college or at a vocational school.
This scholarship is for a Tippecanoe County resident and is not available every year. To be eligible for the Washburn Scholarship a student must be attending an Indiana college to study agriculture, home economics or pre-medicine. The late Mabel and Eugene Higgins began this scholarship in memory of her parents, William S. and Emma Washburn.
Christopher Pennington, son of Tina Burdine, was the recipient of this scholarship. He will be attending Franklin College to study accounting. Mr. & Mrs. Beam, long time residents of Jamestown established this renewable scholarship with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Boone County to provide financial assistance toward college expenses of a Western Boone graduate.
Nick Hieston, son of Robert and Cindy Hieston, was the recipient of this scholarship available only to Western Boone graduates. Indiana University is his school of choice and he plans to pursue a degree in nursing. To be chosen as a recipient, you must have been a 4-H member in Boone County. Nick has just achieved his ten- year 4-H member status. The Bushes established this scholarship in memory of their son, James Ronald Bush, a local area farmer and a 1970 graduate of Granville Wells. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.
Jesse Burdine, son of Gary Burdine and Debbie Burdine, received this award. He plans to study at Purdue University within the school of science. Earl Hoock was a long time Physics and Mathematics teacher at Thorntown and Western Boone High Schools and also drove a school bus for many years. It is the family's goal to provide financial assistance to a deserving Western Boone senior who plans to further their education in the areas of science, mathematics or engineering. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.
Jill Purdy, daughter of Jeff and Kim Purdy, received this scholarship. She will attend the University of Indianapolis to study biology. While in high school, she was a three sport athlete and a leader on and off the floor. This scholarship was established in memory of Kent Poole, a 1982 graduate of Western Boone Jr.Sr. High School by his family. While Kent attended Western Boone, he was involved in tennis, basketball and baseball and was named Western Boone's Senior Athlete. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.
Laura Sanders, daughter of Gary and LeeAnn Sanders, won this scholarship. Purdue University is her college of choice where she will pursue an agribusiness degree. Roscoe and Charlene Stewarts were long time residents of Thorntown. To be a recipient of their scholarship, a student must have maintained at least a "C' average in school and have attended Thorntown Elementary School. This scholarship was established with the Western Boone Education Foundation, a component of the Community Foundation of Boone County.
Kyle Henry, son of Roger and Lisa Henry, is the first recipient of this scholarship. Kyle will major in auto-diesel/agriculture mechanics at Nashville Auto-Diesel College in Nashville, Tennessee. The recipient of this award must have experience in FFA and 4-H, have a good attitude and relationship with classmates, and have maintained at least a "C' average with future plans in the agriculture field. The scholarship was established by the green ribbon safety committee and friends and family of Bobby Hysong. Bobby was a 1983 Western Boone graduate who was active in FFA, 4-H, and basketball and was Farmer of the Year in 2000 who lost his life in a tragic accident. Through the sale of green magnetic ribbons and orange bumper stickers with the words of "Be patient, be kind &.stay behind', a scholarship was established which will be forever a memory of Bobby given yearly to a Western Boone graduating senior.
Alexandra Burns, Melinda Landwerlen, and Chris Pennington are the 2006 recipients. Alexandra, daughter of Tom and Blythe Burns, will be attending IUPUI to study nursing. Melinda, daughter of Cliff and Pam Landwerlen, plans to study chemistry at Purdue University. Franklin College is the school of choice for Chris where he will major in accounting. Students must be attending Western Boone High School and be in good standing with documented academic successes. Mildred and Pliny Randall, who farmed in northern Boone County and lived near Thorntown, established this scholarship. Upon their death, they directed that a general scholarship fund be established for students at four area high schools. The Community Foundation of Boone County administers the scholarship for students attending Western Boone High School.
Anelia Ray was the recipient of this scholarship. She is currently enrolled at Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. To qualify for this award, the recipient must be either a current resident of Boone County or a graduate of a Boone County high school who has completed at least one year of law school at IU School of Law in Indianapolis. Judge Wharry was a graduate of Zionsville Community High School, Wabash College, IU, and the Indiana University of Law in Indianapolis. He was an attorney in Boone County for 30 years including serving in positions such as Boone County Circuit Court judge, interim judge in Howard Circuit Court, Zionsville Town Court judge, and Boone County Deputy Prosecutor. Friends and family of Judge Wharry established this scholarship.
Michelle Stephens, daughter of Jeff and Diane Stephens, is the first recipient of this scholarship. She will be attending the University of Indianapolis and plans to major in religion. This scholarship is awarded to a Speedway High School student who has been a member of the SHS music program for at least two years and has exhibited qualities of scholarship, leadership, hard work and responsibility in pursuing and developing musicianship. The friends and family of Bob Wise established this scholarship. He was a band and choral director of Speedway High School for 33 years and dedicated his life to mentoring youth through his love of music, people and God.
Vanessa Beck, Andrew Heffner, and Cormack Miller were the 2006 recipients of this county wide scholarship. Vanessa, daughter of Denise Beck, is a graduate of Lebanon High School. She will pursue a visual communications/photography degree at Herron School of Art at IUPUI. Andrew, son of Doug and Sandy Heffner, a Western Boone Jr. Sr. High School graduate, is majoring in sports management/education at Taylor University. Cormack, son of Steve and Jane Miller, graduated from Zionsville High School. He will be studying biochemistry at Indiana University. Carl Witt, a life long resident of Boone County, worked on a family farm for twenty years, and was a school board member, established this scholarship.
Austin Hall and Katelyn Ostendorf were the recipients of the Zionsville Athletic Booster Club scholarships. Austin, son of Jeff Hall and Denise Hall, will attend Indiana University to pursue a degree in business. Katelyn, daughter of Greg and Janet Ostendorf, will study biology/pre-med at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Both recipients excelled in a sport in high school; Austin in tennis and Katelyn in soccer. The Zionsville Booster Club established this scholarship for one girl and one boy from Zionsville Community High School who are actively involved in school athletics.
Michelle Boyle, daughter of Craig and Julie Boyle, and Mallory Jennings, daughter of Tim anf Beth Jennings, were the 2006 recipients. Michelle will attend Purdue University to pursue a degree in chemistry. Mallory plans to major in English at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The trustees choose students who have shown that they have significantly benefited from the academic opportunities and instructional excellence provided by the high school and annually award scholarships.
Kathryn Healy, daughter of Darla Healy, was one of the recipients of the Zionsville Optimist Club scholarships. She will attend Purdue University to study medical technology. The Zionsville Optimist Club established this scholarship to be awarded to a student who best exhibits character, leadership, and motivation, as well as having financial need and will be pursuing a four year degree.
Daniel Boehnig, son of Darrell Boehnig and Lori Huber-Boehnig, was the recipient of this years' scholarship. Vincennes University is the school of choice for Daniel, where he will pursue a broadcasting degree. In the spring of 2003, a second scholarship became available through the Zionsville Optimist Club for a Zionsville senior who plans to obtain an associate degree or a vocational technical certificate.
In January of 2005, the Community Foundation of Boone County entered into a partnership with the Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant organization to provide scholarships and awards to the contestants of the Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant and Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen Pageant. These pageants were held again in Boone County at the Zionsville Community High School Performing Arts Center in June, 2006. Over $25,000 will be awarded in scholarships to 27 women for Miss Indiana. $1,950 will be given in scholarships to 12 contestants for Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen. Miss Indiana will compete to become the Miss America 2007.
