Background

Established By: Dr. Howard Hull, Jr., past Zionsville Community Schools superintendent. It is unique in that it is awarded to a high school senior, but it is not received by the student until he or she is enrolled in his/her second year of college.
Date Established: 1997
Length of Scholarship: One Year
Renewable: No

Requirements / Selection Criteria

Residency: Boone County, Indiana
Diploma: Zionsville Community High School (after having attended ZCHS for at least two years)
Enrollment: The recipient must show evidence of being a full time student in good standing (B average) at the college or university in his or her sophomore year before the funds will be made available.
Specialized Study: Pursuing an altruistic career.
Special Characteristics:
  • A demonstrable work ethic;
  • scholarship and other indicators of future success;
  • participation in band or orchestra at any time during the student’s high school career;
  • service to the community, school, and church;
  • financial need is a consideration, but is not primary.
Special Preference: No
Financial Need: Considered but not mandatory
Minimum GPA: 2.5 (4.0 system)

Tuition & Fees: $1,000
Method: Paid directly to college or university for application to tuition in the sophomore year.

Application Requirements

Deadline: April 5, 2008
Send To: The application shall consist of the cover page attached to their answers and information requested. The application, essay, and letters of reference should be emailed to lisahull@ameritech.net no later than April 5. A hard copy should be placed into a binder and dropped off to the High School Guidance Department.
Application to Include:
  1. Second page of the Stay-in-School application (PDF 88K) as the cover page;
  2. transcript;
  3. three letters of recommendation addressed specifically to Dr. Hull; two of these should be from any current ZCS teacher grade K-12, School Board member, or administrator, and one from any community leader or clergyman;
  4. respond to the following: name, address, phone number, and occupation of yourself and your parents, date of birth, date of enrollment at ZCHS, colleges and universities to which you have applied for admission,been accepted at, and have chosen to attend; school and community activities in which you have participated, including any honors and awards as well as offices held; paid work experiences and duties;
  5. an essay that includes your career and personal goals and any special circumstances that you would like the Scholarship Committee to consider. The final portion of the essay should include your personal definition of altruism and how that definition applies to you and your career.
