In 2018, a portion of The Community Foundation’s work will be focused on strengthening the organizations that meet the needs of Boone County.
To meet our mission of creating a thriving community for all, we partner to build and strengthen Boone County, bringing together people and organizations that want to make a difference. We help guide philanthropy and are committed to improving the quality of life here. To do this effectively, we must be alert and have our finger on the pulse of the challenges facing the nonprofits that serve our county. We need to be flexible enough to meet nonprofits right where they are because we know that a strong, thriving nonprofit community means we can steward donor dollars with more confidence and with greater impact.
As grantmakers, the Community Foundation has a responsibility to ensure that grant dollars are well spent and we take that role very seriously. In 2017, we made a distinct and strategic effort to strengthen the nonprofit sector through intentional programming and education. At our upcoming Community Impact Breakfast, we will announce our Capacity Building Initiative, where we will take our leadership efforts to the next level.
What is Capacity Building?
Capacity building is a term used in the charitable sector which describes activities that are designed to help improve a nonprofit’s ability to meet its mission and maximize the resources given to it by the community. Capacity building services are distinguishable from direct program services, general operating support or capital expenses, in that they typically seek to increase the knowledge, skill level and/or efficiency of a nonprofit board and staff. We plan to partner nonprofits with highly skilled consultants who have the expertise and ability to focus on the greatest need of the nonprofits and help strengthen and grow their programs.

How will it work?
Organizations who wish to participate in Building Capacity : Building Community will fill out an assessment which will help guide their individual capacity building needs. The Community Foundation has chosen the Nonprofit Lifecycle Matrix by Speakman Management Consulting as the tool by which organizational growth areas are identified.
Here’s What To Do…
- We ask that the Executive Director/CEO lead the effort and be the primary point of contact for the organization with buy-in and commitment from your board.
- Second, click the button below to fill out your organization’s information and provide email addresses for your staff & board representatives. We ask that at least 4 representatives from the organization participate in the assessment…ideally two staff and two board members. (We realize that in some cases there are not two staff…or any staff. In this case, a Board/Volunteer combination is acceptable.)
- Upon receiving this information, we will send a link to the assessment. Links will be sent beginning the week of March 12, 2018.
- All staff and board should complete the assessment by March 23, 2018. Don’t worry! It’s easy and quick. There are no right or wrong answers.
When each participant from the organization completes the assessment, and the results are compiled, a detailed report will be sent to the organization. This should serve as a tool for Board/Staff conversations about growth areas and tactics to address them within the organization.
Build Capacity: Build Community Courses will be built around the feedback we receive from organizational assessments. Organizations will then be invited to exclusive and in-depth training programs, where you will hone in on your greatest needs and work with others in the community to grow and strengthen your impact in Boone County. Only organizations who complete this assessment process will have access to the 2018 training.
We want to ensure that we are providing the nonprofits in Boone County with the tools to take their organizations to the next level, whatever that might mean for them in their lifecycle.
We will use the information from reports to organize deep dive training sessions with industry experts and give exclusive access to those who have participated in Build Capacity : Build Community.
The Community Foundation wants to build a relationship with every potential grantee. Through their participation, organizations are initiating a dialogue and allowing for a full understanding of the organization’s culture and dynamic.
We also want to help organizations build relationships with each other, allowing for collaboration and efficiencies in programs and services.
